"SCI FI Channel has greenlit production on Flash Gordon, based on the popular comic strip franchise, it was announced today at the Television Critic's Association tour. Production on the 22 one-hour episodes begins in Canada in early 2007. The series, produced by Reunion Pictures, is slated to debut on SCI FI in July of '07, with a broadcast syndication window to follow.

Under an agreement with property owner King Features Syndicate, the new series is being produced by RHI's Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr. (Tin Man, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven, The Ten Commandments), who previously produced SCI FI's popular miniseries event Legend of Earthsea.

Ming, Dale Arden, and Dr. Hans Zarkov are among the many beloved characters returning to television in this contemporary retelling of the intergalactic exploits of Flash Gordon. Stellar adventures and heroic battles mark this inventive new take on the perennial science fiction classic. The Flash Gordon comic strip was created in 1934 by legendary comic-strip artist Alex Raymond and is still distributed internationally today by King Features Syndicate."

Just found out that it was reported last month that Flash Gordon will be Eric Johnson formerly of Smallville:

After the last failed attempt to bring back Flash Gordon I'm surprised they can be bothered. Only goes to show how lacking in imagination Hollywood is these days. I suppose it'll be "updated" etc, etc.

Why not just watch the original on TVS here in Sydney, Saturdays at 6:3-pm; crappy sets, spaceships on strings with fireworks in the back and wooden acting. It's great!

I loved the cheesy camp Flash film back in the '80s. I didn't think of it as cheesy or camp back then. I just loved the shiny armour and the rich colour or the look of the film in general plus I liked Queen's music.

I wonder if the new series will be set in the 1930s? I'd like that, but I would probably adapt to a modern Flash I suppose.

I love the Art Deco look of the old Flash Gordon and films like Metropolis and The Shape of Things to Come.

This is what I loved about Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow as well because it embraced the past. It was kind of a retro-movie. Smile

Most likely "modern" due to the expense of a 30's version.

1930's man hit by lighting wakes up in the distant future of 1980.
The worlds only sci-fi-musical-comedy-drama. With a trip to Mars to boot.

Loved "Sky Captain". Very sad it wasn't better received.
Best last line in a movie for ages.

"Sony's Columbia Pictures is in early talks to acquire the film rights for a big-screen adaptation of Flash Gordon that Breck Eisner would direct and Neal Moritz would produce. Eisner would also executive produce, says The Hollywood Reporter."
