Smith and Jones came in at 7th place in the ratings for June 30 viewing.

Wow what an impressive result:

Did anyone else notice the "RUN" scene? Where The Doctor grabbed Martha's hand and said "Run" just like in "Rose".

*raises hand in the air* I did!

Yeah, I got that too. There are a few similarities between the two, probably on purpose.

Average.

Not particularly good, not particularly bad. Pretty much what I've come to expect from modern DW - slick special effects to cover the absence of anything more substantial...

Nice to see the the relationship between Martha and the Torchwood employee explained. It didn't take much effort, it did no harm to the story and at least it neatly ties up that little discontinuity within the ongoing TV series.

It made a pleasant change to see them make the effort to please the more discerning fans of DW.

Yep, I'll second what most people have said here about Smith and Jones being infinitely better than the infantile mess of New Earth. Martha has got tonnes of promise; assertive, intelligent and utterly hot. As someone has already said, and apologies for the blatant plagiarism, but, Rose who ....?
This looks to be a vast improvement on Season Two already (I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed The Runaway Bride), assuming RTD can calm himself down regularly and resist the urge to infect the storyline with romantic inferences, emotional monologues and barely suppressed sexual tension. I'm not holding my breath - that hooray/boo sucks moment with the sonic screwdriver looked to be a deliberate two-fingers-up at the billions of fans who've publicly railed against that device's ubiquitousness.
Erm .. where was I? Smith and Jones. Great stuff. Borrowed a tad from the movie version of Hitchhikers Guide, but that's nitpicking. The Judoon rocked. I had to deal with a parking officer last weekend who had similar compassionate qualities.
All in all, very stoked about this opener, and here's to the TARDIS leaving earth and visiting ANOTHER PLANET!!!!
