I'm re-watching Catweazle at the moment. I'd completely forgotten the cast of characters in the second season (including Peter Butterworth, who played the Monk in a couple of Hartnell Doctor Who stories) although I think I've seen them all before.

But, yes - Catweazle, another piece of my childhood happily revisited!

I've recently watched the whole series too. Yes all the regular cast apart from the kid, have appeared in Dr Who at some time.

The mum (Elspet Gray) was in Arc of Infinity, the dad was in an episode but I can't remember what it was for the life of me, Peter Butterworth of course was already mentioned, and Geoffrey Bayldon was in Creature From The Pit and played the Doctor in 2 Unbound audio plays.

Touchwood was the toad.

Charles 'Bud' Tingwell was Mr Bennet in the first series - during his stay in the UK, he also appeared in Danger Man, Dracula, Prince of Darkness (the third Hammer Dracula movie), Adam Adamant Lives, The Avengers, Out of the Unknown, UFO, and provided voices in Thuderbirds and Captain Scarlet. After his return to Australia, he was in Ocean Girl, Thunderstone, Round the Twist and the deservedly forgotten Legacy of the Silver Shadow, plus a couple of roles in Prisoner, so quite an impressive array of 'cult' TV shows and movies under his belt.

Just split off the Catweazle posts from the MSN message thread. Everyone please feel free to discuss this great old show here... (Annoyingly, moderators can split conversation threads but not combine threads in phpbb...!)

I've just finished watching it. While I preferred the original series generally, the second series tied up much more neatly and satisfyingly, with the quests of both Catweazle and Cedric/Owl-face resolved by two answers (more or less) to the same riddle.

For those who can spot minor details, can you tell me the links between Catweazle and South Park, and Catweazle and Dark Shadows?

You've stumped me there Greg.
I will tell you one thing though. This little discussion has inspired me to go and look for it on DVD Smile

A: Greg. He's the link because he can spot links between them.

Am I right?

Well, you are right, though that is an extra link that I hadn't thought of.

Just to show, here's the Dark Shadows link: Maggie Evans was the name of the production secretary on the second season of Catweazle. Maggie Evans was also the name of one of the recurring characters in Dark Shadows. As coincidence would have it, in 1970, one Maggie Evans was working on Catweazle while the other was appearing in Dark Shadows.

For those keen to work out the South Park link, it occurs in the very final episodes of Catweazle - in the story, not the credits...

Working on the assumption that no one else who has seen it recently has noticed, the answer to the Catweazle - South Park link can be given in three words...

Big Gay Al.

Those familiar with South Park don't need this recurring character explained, but those of you who've seen Catweazle may be thinking I've gone mad. But let me explain!

In the last ever episode of Catweazle, The Thirteenth Sign, Catweazle finds a hot air balloon near his home in the twentieth century, Duck Halt. He determines that this is the thirteenth sign of the Zodiac, representing the circle in which the twelve signs apparently sit in the sky, and the balloon is a symbol of that circle. Confirmation is given by signage on a life preserver attached to the basket of the balloon, which reads 'Zodiac'.

This is, however, not the only identifier of the balloon. This is a real hot air balloon, used to transport people for recreation, and is registered. And the registration ID is displayed on the balloon itself, plainly visible in the broadcast episode.

The registration is: G-AYAL. And it's the biggest G-AYAL I've ever seen!

I couldn't find any photos of this on the internet, but if you look here you'll see confirmation (as well as an indication that Jon Pertwee was considered for the lead in the show...).

So there you have it - possible proof that you should never listen to anything I say!

I haven't seen this series yet. I was hoping it would be available at Galaxy but it isn't there.

In the meantime, Catweazle is apparently going to become a movie:

And Bill Nighy's name is on the same page. Could it be that he will take the role of Catweazle???

Yesterday finally bought Catweazle on DVD at the ABC Shop.

Seen the first episode The Sun In The Bottle and it was a very very fun start to the series.
