In case you haven't been to ABC Shop lately there are two DVD releases that of special interest to Doctor Who fans.

The first is The Andromeda Anthology:
http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=744600

This features the serials A For Andromeda & its sequel The Andromeda Breakthough. A For Andromeda was produced by Michael Hayes later a director on Doctor Who.

Have a look at the IMDb entry for both serials to see other familiar Who names which includes Peter Halliday.

As an added bonus A For Andromeda starred a very young Julie Christie and hence was responsible for her road to stardom. However she did not reprise the role for The Andromeda Breakthrough and was replaced by Susan Hampshire.

The other release is The Tripods season 1:
http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=744640

Christopher Barry another Who director, was a director on The Tripods but reading from the DVD cover he does not seem to have directed on the first season and therefore must have directed on the second and final season. (A third season was planned but that was abandoned when the series got cancelled by one Michael Grade.)

On a side note, a film version of The Tripods is slated for release in 2009

I have yet to start A For Andromeda but a clip of it was shown in this morning's Torchwood episode Random Shoes. This was the DVD that Eugene had borrowed that Owen watched at Torchwood.

As to The Tripods I am now up to the middle of episode 6 and from my viewing so far it features the very beautiful Pam Salem. Very lovely to see her.

It is good to see that Tripods is now easily available on DVD, and that finally season 2 will be released in that format. I think previously it was only available on laser disk or illegal download/copies, the latter being usually of poor quality. I do remember seeing this as a child and being terrified by the Tripods themselves, and seeing them again it has brought back a lot of those memories.

I am interested in seeing how they will adapt the books into movie format...

Regards, Izzy

Finished The Tripods season 1 and I found it enjoyable seeing the journey that the boys have taken.

Contrary to what I said before Christopher Barry did direct on this season with episodes 9 to 13, the last five episodes of the season.

Finally finished The Andromeda Anthology.

It was fascinating to look what is left of A For Andromeda including the full episode Eye of the Tiger. Jule Christie being very good as Andromeda ("Andre")/Christine.

I enjoyed The Andromeda Breakthrough with Susan Hampshire being a pretty good replacement for Julie Christie as Andre.

The Andromeda Breakthrough certainly looked topical for today's issue of climate change.

I also should give praise to Peter Halliday and Mary Morris as well.
