The shorter Big Finish adventures have proved to be extremely popular with many. The compressed time period & economical length generates material that quickly captures the imagination. The pacing seems faster and perhaps more in tune with the current run of television episodes. Some of us have criticised Big Finish plays from time to time for being somewhat self indulgent. The current run demonstrates non of this. For myself The Vanity Box and especially Urgent Calls have provided much enjoyment on long car journeys. There should still be a place for the longer adventure , where & when appropriate, as a good mix of lengths will help combat familiarity and repetition.
Coming hot on the heels of Circular Time the current adventure 100 has attempted to recapture some of the magic and success of the former and for the most part does a superb job. The 6th Doctor and Evelyn have grown into each other and the relationship between the two realistic and credible, something sadly lacking from the 6th's Doctor's television adventures. Each of the four stories was well written and carried my interest with all being worthy of multiple airings. If I wanted to complain about something it might be said that the cd extras are becoming a little predictable. Perhaps we could have more discussion about the nature and plot of each story. |
