Okay, I saw this idea on another site, and thought it was a good idea. I love when I can relate a song to Doctor Who, so I wanted to spread the songs I know and learn of new ones. I promise I'll lay off posting love songs that remind me of Doctor/Rose (unless there's one that's just too good to resist!), and I want you guys to post as well.

First I'll post these two songs by Train. The first one is Ordinary. I think it's a perfect 10th Doctor song, starting right from the regeneration (see if you can spot the hint of Rose looking into the time vortex):

Whose eyes am I behind?
I don’t recognize anything that I see
Whose skin is this design?
I don’t want this to be the way that you see me

I don’t understand anything anymore
In this world that I’m tired of
Is taking me right up these walls
That I climb up
To get to your story
It’s anything but ordinary

And when the world is on its knees with me its fine
And when I come to the rescue I get nothing but left behind
Everybody seems to be getting what they need, where's mine
‘Cause your what I need so very but I'm anything but ordinary

Can you save me from this world of mine
Before I get myself arrested with this expectation
You are the one look what you’ve done
What have you done?
This is not some kind of joke
You’re just a kid
You weren’t ready for what you did

And when the world is on its knees with me it's fine
And when I come to the rescue I do it for you time after time
Everybody seems to be getting what they need, where's mine
‘Cause you what I need so very but I'm anything but ordinary

I think I'm trying to save the world for you
You’ve been saving me too
We could just stay in and save each other

I'm anything but ordinary
(ordinary)
I'm anything but ordinary
(ordinary)

It was included on the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack, but I reckon it works so much better here.

The next song (definitely one of my all-time favourites) is
Drops of Jupiter. The lyrics are regarded as very abstract - no one can figure out what they mean. Apparently it was inspired by one of the band's dead mother visiting them in a dream, but I saw more than that.

I think a great way to apply it to Doctor Who is to imagine that it's from Mickey's point of view, and that Rose is visiting.

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey

Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights are faded
And that heaven is overrated

Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had . . . and me

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way

[Repeat 1st Chorus]

When I heard that for the first time, I cried. Then again, I cry a lot. But still...

Please post your own songs here, or at least reply to tell me whether I'm wasting my time or not!

KLF's 'Doctorin' the TARDIS' always reminded me of Doctor Who, for some reason. I'm still unable to work out why.

On a more serious note, I'm listening to Radiohead's In Rainbows CD2 again, and at the start of 'Up on the Ladder', Thom Yorke sings, "I'm trapped in the TARDIS". Though I doubt he's a fan, it's nice hearing that.

EDIT: And I know that isn't actually what this thread was about. Okay, how about... 'Subterranean Homesick Alien'? The lyrics could be a reflection of the trapped-on-Earth Third Doctor or the trapped-on-Earth Eighth Doctor, or very simply a companion who was left behind. Sarah Jane, maybe. Gosh, even the Brigadier. And then, on the same album, 'Electioneering' is about Mr Saxon's rise to power (I actually tried, ages ago, to rewrite the lyrics to be a satirical play on the Mr Saxon thing, but the lyrics were actually too appropriate, and I ended up only managing to change "IMF" to "KLF". Which is pretty sad.

Lyrics:

Electioneering

I will stop, I will stop at nothing.
Say the right things when electioneering
I trust I can rely on your vote.

When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.
When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.
Ha ha ha

Riot shields, voodoo economics,
it's just business, cattle prods and the I.M.F.
I trust I can rely on your vote.

When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.
When I go forwards you go backwards
and somewhere we will meet.

(I dunno, it always seemed appropriate to me; "When I go forward you go backwards" would refer to all the Utopia-travelling they do, sometimes on-screen, sometimes off-screen. And the Master really would go "ha ha ha"!)

This one's Ordinary Day by Vanessa Carlton. It works for pretty much any female companion, but I think it works well for Rose or Martha (Rose more).

Just a day, just an ordinary day
Just tryin' to get by
Just a boy, just an ordinary boy, but
He was looking to the sky and
As he asked if I would come along
I started to realize
That everyday he finds just what he's lookin' for
Like a shooting star he shines, he said

Take my hand
Live while you can,
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand

And as he spoke, he spoke ordinary words
Though they did not feel
For I felt what I had not felt before
You'd swear those words could heal and
As I looked up into those eyes
His vision borrows mine
And I know he's no stranger
For I feel I've held him for all of time
And he said

Take my hand
Live while you can,
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand

Please come with me
See what I see
Touch the stars for time will not flee
Time will not flee, can't you see...

Just a dream, just an ordinary dream
As I wake in bed
And the boy, that ordinary boy
Was it all in my head?
Did he ask if I would come along
It all seemed so real
But as I looked to the door I saw the boy
Standing there with a deal
And he said

Take my hand
Live while you can,
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand

Just a day, just an ordinary day
Just tryin' to get by
Just a boy, just an ordinary boy, but
He was looking to the sky

Now for an old Disney favourite - A Whole New World from Aladdin. It works for pretty much any Doctor and female companion, but best for the 9th Doctor and Rose (see if you can spot his catchphrase!).

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride (or should that be TARDIS ride?)

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Now I'm in a whole new world with you

Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be

A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
That's where we'll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

Mm, it does say "fantastic"... although the idea of Eccleston singing this song, with his Northern hard accent, makes me giggle inanely.

Here's another one about the Doctor taking a companion away with him - Ride by Amanda Marshall.

If you need some transportation
From a world of tribulation
Tell me your destination
I'll be - I'll be your ride
If you're out of inspiration
All you feel is desperation
Consider this an invitation
I'll be

I'll be your ride
We'll get a running start and we'll take to the sky baby
Ride
Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the prize
And ride

When the world that you've created
Has got you feeling tired and jaded
Get your spirits elevated
Dig down - way deep inside
When you're feeling scorned and hated
Under appreciated
And your guiding light has faded
I'll be

I'll be your ride
We'll get a running start and we'll take to the sky baby
Ride
Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the prize
And ride

When you call but they don't remember
When your mail says return to sender
Keep the faith baby don't surrender
I'm on your side
I'll be your - I'll be your
I'll be

I'll be your ride
We'll get a running start and we'll take to the sky baby
Ride
Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the prize, and

Ride
Get a running start baby, we'll take to the sky
Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the prize
And ride

Good song.

Warning: it’s a hell of a nerdy one..

I Am the Very Model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer
(Doctor Who and the Pirates)

I am the very model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer,
I’ve information on all things a Gallifreyan holds most dear,
I’ve linked into the Matrix through its exitonic circuitry,
I understand dimensional and relative chronometry.

I’m very well acquainted too with matters of the Capitol,
I’ll give you verse and chapter on Panopticonian protocol,
I’ve been into the Death Zone and I’ve played the Game of Rassilon–
(Rassilon? Assilon, Bassilon.. ah-ha!)
With pestilential monsters that I got a lot of hassle from!

With pestilential monsters that he got a lot of hassle from!
With pestilential monsters that he got a lot of hassle from!
With pestilential monsters that he got a lot of hassle-hassle from!

I understand each language and I speak every vernacular,
I’ll conjugate each verb obscure, decline each line irregular,
In short in every matter that a Gallifreyan holds most dear,
I am the very model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer.

In short in every matter that a Gallifreyan holds most dear,
he is the very model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer!

I’ve tackled shady Castellans with devious behavior,
I’ve sparred with Time Lord chancellors like Thalia, Goth, or Flavia.
In fact on some occasions I’ve held office Presidentially,
Though maybe I won’t mention I was ousted out eventually.

I know just how it feels to be a wanted man and on the run,
But wouldn’t leave the carefree buccaneering life for anyone,
Though sometimes my adventures seem absurdly operatical,
(Operatical? Hatical, patical.. ah-ha!)
With ups and down and twists and turns and incidents piratical.

With ups and down and twists and turns and incidents piratical!
With ups and down and twists and turns and incidents piratical!
With ups and down and twists and turns and incidents pirati-ratical!

I’ve sailed the seven seas of Earth and all the oceans of the Moon,
My trusty true Type 40 is my Gallifreyan picaroon,
But is this really what the average Gallifreyan holds most dear?
I wonder what they think about this Gallifreyan Buccaneer.

But is this really what the average Gallifreyan holds most dear!
We wonder what they think about this Gallifreyan Buccaneer!

But…

I’ve defeated evil robots such as Daleks, Quarks, and Cybermen,
I’ve overthrown dictators from Tobias Vaughn to Mavic Chen,
I’ve rescued helpless maidens from the devastating Viking hordes,
Vanquished Autons, Axons, Daemons, Krotons, Monoids, Vampires, Voords.

I’ve liberated planets and delivered them from total war,
Saved Earth, Manussa, Dulkis, Skonnos, Earth, Tigella, Earth once more,
In short I know I am the truest Rassilonian legate,
(Legate? Decate, Hecate.. Hecate? Mm, not sure if that’s canonical.. ah-ha! I have it!)
And so to Time Lords all I say remember me to Gallifrey!

A sentiment we all agree, remember him to Gallifrey!
A sentiment we all agree, remember him to Gallifrey!
A sentiment we all agree, remember him to Galli-Gallifrey!

I’m not content to just observe, I am a bold adventurer,
Though other Time Lords mock this Gallifreyan interventioner,
I know in every matter that a Time Lord really should hold dear,
I am the very model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer.

We know in every matter that a Time Lord really should hold dear,
He is the very model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer!

Love Don't Roam- Murry Gold

Well, I've roamed about this Earth
With just a suitcase in my hand,
And I've met some bog-eyed Joe's,
I've met the blessed, I've met the damned.
But of all the strange, strange creatures
In the air, at sea, on land,
Oh, my girl, my girl, my precious girl,
I love you, you understand.

So, reel me in, my precious girl,
Come on, take me home.
'Cause my body's tired of travelling
And my heart don't wish to roam. No, no.

I have wandered, I have rambled
I have crossed this crowded sphere,
And I've seen a mass of problems
That I long to disappear.
Now, all I have's this anguished heart,
For you have vanished too.
Oh, my girl, my girl, my precious girl,
Just what is this man to do?

So, reel me in, my precious girl,
Come on, take me home.
'Cause my body's tired of travelling
And my heart don't wish to roam.

Yeah, reel me in, my precious girl,
Come on, take me home.
'Cause my body's tired of travelling
And my heart don't wish to roam. No, no.

Well, you took me in, you stole my heart,
I cannot roam no more.
Because love, it stays within you,
It does not wash up on a shore.
But a fighting man forgets each cut
Each knock, each bruise, each fall,
But a fighting man cannot forget
Why his love don't roam no more.

Oh, reel me in, my precious girl,
Come on, take me home.
'Cause my body's tired of travelling
And my heart don't wish to roam.

Yeah, reel me in, my precious girl,
Come on, take me home.
'Cause my body's tired of travelling
And my heart don't wish to roam.

Yeah, walk with me, my love, my love,
Walk tall, walk proud, walk far,
For you know my love, you are, you are,
You are my shining star.

Walk with me, oh my love,
Walk tall, walk proud, walk far.
For you know my love, you are, you are,
You are my shining star, you are, you are.
Yeah!

Reel me in, my precious girl,
Come on, take me home.
My body's tired of travelling
And my heart don't wish to roam.

That's cheating Razz

How about 'Bound To Ramble' by The John Butler Trio

I walk for miles.
Circumnavigate these lands.
Walking blindly,
Holding out my hands.
And I pass the stones
That remind me why I'm here.
I follow the setting sun
And you were there.

Don't you see what she's done to me.
I was running blind but now I can be
And if theres just one sign
Hell you know I can see.
Girl I was meant for you,
You were meant for me ,
Her teachings in everyday
And boy I know she ain't preaching
But I feel the need to pray.

She like the ocean size
Pounding on my shores.
Knocking down my walls ,
opening up all my doors.

I'm Bound to Ramble
All my days with another…

While we're on the topic of rambling, I've got another song by Train that's about just that (and because it's the Doctor, it works on two levels Wink) . It's called Ramble On.

It's time I was on my way
Thanks to you I'm much obliged
Such a pleasant stay
But now it's time for me to go
The autumn moon lights my way.
and now I smell the rain
and and with it pain
and it's headed my way

ah sometimes I grow so tired
but I know I got one thing I got to do
ramble on
well now's the time the time is now
sing my song
I'm goin' around the world
gonna find my girl
I'm on my way
I've been this way ten years to the day
I'm gonna ramble on
I'm gonna find the queen of all my dreams

Got no time for spreadin' roots
The time has come to be gone
No I can't be dragged a thousand times
It's time to ramble on

When I'm alone
Oh well now's the time
The time is now
Sing my song
I'm going around the world
Gonna find my girl
I'm on my way
I've been this way ten years to the day
I'm gonna ramble on
I'm gonna find the queen of all my dreams

Now's the time it can be told
My freedom I hold dear
But years ago
In days of old
The magic filled the air
But in the darkest steps of Mordor
I met a girl so fair

But go up to her I run
courage up and slipped away with her
ah shit

and there's nothing I can do now
I guess I'll keep on
Ramblin' on
I'm gonna sing my song

I'm going around the world
Gonna find my girl
I'm on my way
I've been this way ten years to the day
I'm gonna ramble on
Sing my song
I'm going around the world
I wanna see my girl

I went searching for my baby

My my my my my baby

Here's one of many Post Doomsday songs - Patience by Take That. It's good to show the Doctor's pain after losing Rose and how he needs Martha to have patience.

Just have a little patience

I'm still hurting from a love I lost,
I'm feeling your frustration.
Any minute all the pain will stop.
Just hold me close inside your arms tonight,
don't be too hard on my emotions

Cause I
Need time
My heart in numb, has no feeling.
So while I'm still healing,
Just try and have a little patience.

I really wanna start over again,
I know you wanna be my salvation.
The one that I can always depend.

I'll try to be strong. Believe me,
I'm trying to move on,
It's complicated but understand me.

Cause I
Need time,
My heart is numb has no feeling,
So while I'm still healing,
Just try and have a little patience,

Yeah, have a little patience, Yeah

Cause these scars run so deep,
It's been hard,
But I have to believe in me.

Have a little patience,
Have a little patience,

Whoa, Cause I
I just need time,
My heart is numb has no feeling,
So while I'm still healing,
just try, and have a little patience,

Have a little patience,
My heart is numb has no feeling,
So while I'm still healing
just try and have a little... Patience

Here's a good one. It's about Rose and how she'd do anything to see the Doctor again.

I Would Cross All Of Time And Space

My life was going nowhere, I was stuck in a hole
To achieve something greater was my ultimate goal
Then when you came along my life was turned upside down
I always felt better when you were around
You took me away and made my dreams come true
I found myself falling in love with you

And I would cross all of time and space
To have a chance to see your face
Coz when you left it was way too soon
If I could see you again I’d be over the moon

You showed me the sites, you showed me the sounds
You promised me you’d always be around
We had adventures, we ran for our lives
But through it all our love survived
At least it did, until that fateful day
When right before my eyes, you were torn away

And I would cross all of space and time
To once again feel your hand in mine
Coz when you left it was way too soon
If I could see you again I’d be over the moon

My soul is shattered, broken, killed
There’s a hole in my heart and it cannot be filled
You were my everything, and now you’re gone
And so I mourn you through this song
But know this my dear – I’ll do whatever it takes
To feel the warmth of your embrace

Well I would climb to a mountain’s tip
If I could kiss your soft sweet lips
Coz when you left it was way too soon
If I could see you again I’d be over the moon

Yes I would cross all of time and space
To have a chance to see your face
Coz when you left it was way too soon
If I could see you again I’d be over the moon.

Okay, okay, so it's not just a coincidence that this song is completely and obviously about Doctor Who. I wrote it.

While I'm here I thought I would post this song I heard on a fanvid and thought it fit the fandom really well. Later I read somewhere that the song writer did have he character Rose in mind when he wrote the song.

The youtube fanvid
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pnhvLNwZ65M&feature=related

I'ts called "Rose" by Geoff Smith.

If you walk away from me
Well you know that I hope that it would sure as hell be
Better than everything
And all that I've let you see

Tell your mom I said hello
Tell her sorry that I ever let you go
Far from the life you knew
And all that I put you through

But don't let the time that you knew
Break you like you broke me
Now that you're free

Rose
You're fantastic
You know if it can't last
You'll always be the one who knows
You'll always be my Rose
Fantastic Rose

Remember how it all began
All you had to do was hold my hand
And we've been running all this time it seems
But what does it really mean

It seems like a million years
So how's it all disappear
Are you still here

Rose
You're fantastic
You know if it can't last
You'll always be the one who knows
You'll always be my Rose
Fantastic Rose

All that I ever could show you was love
And Rose, you taught me how to let go
Of love

You saved me more than I could tell
Not that I'm desperate but you know just where to cut me
And you did
Right through the bone
But somehow I'm never alone

Rose
You're fantastic
You know if it can't last
You'll always be the one who knows
You'll always be my Rose
Fantastic Rose

It's nice and lovely, but I think the lyric should have been:

Coz when you left it was way too soon
If I could - oh, hang on, just gotta fight these Judoon

Aw thanks. I actually did give it a tune. The verses are quite boring, but the tune for the chorus is based on that of A Thousand Miles, another Vanessa Carlton song. Incidently, that song's also a good Post Doomsday song for Rose.

Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I'm home bound

Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd

And I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
Tonight

It's always times like these
When I think of you
And I wonder
If you ever
Think of me

'Cause everything's so wrong
And I don't belong
Living in your
Precious memories

'Cause I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
Tonight

And I, I
Don't want to let you know
I, I
Drown in your memory
I, I
Don't want to let this go
I, I
Don't....

Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I'm home bound

Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd

And I still need you
And I still miss you
And now I wonder....

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass us by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you...

If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
'Cause you know I'd walk
A thousand miles
If I could
Just see you
If I could
Just hold you
Tonight

It's called "Rose" by Geoff Smith.

Yeah I love that song. It's one of my favourites.

Here's one that used to make me cry (I've toughened up a bit now). It's called Beautiful, and apparently it's sung by Amy Grant on one album and Jennifer Paige on another. It's good for companions who were forcibly separated from the Doctor, like Sarah Jane or Rose.

I'm looking for a way to feel you hold me
To feel your heart beat just one more time
I'm reaching back, trying to touch the moment
Each precious minute that you were mine
How do you prepare, when you love someone this way,
To let them go a little more each day?

The stars we put in place
The dreams we didn't waste
The sorrows we embraced
The world belonged to you and me
The oceans that we crossed
The innocence we've lost
The hurting at the end
I'd go there again,
Coz it was beautiful.
It was beautiful.

Some days missing you is overwhelming
When it hits me you're not coming back
And in my darkest hours, I have wondered
Was it worth it for the time we had?
My thoughts get kinda scattered, but one thing I know is true
I bless the day that I found you

The stars we put in place
The dreams we didn't waste
The sorrows we embraced
The world belonged to you and me
The oceans that we crossed
The innocence we've lost
The hurting at the end
I'd go there again,
Coz it was beautiful.
It was beautiful.

The rules we stepped aside
The fear that we defied
The thrill of the ride
The fire in our hearts that burned
The oceans that we crossed
The innocence we've lost
The hurting at the end
I'd go there again,
Coz it was beautiful.
So beautiful.
It was beautiful.

Here's Coldplay's X & Y. I think it's good for 10/Rose, especially with a couple of references to The Christmas Invasion:

Trying hard to speak and
Fighting with my weak hand
Driven to distraction
So part of the plan
When something is broken
And you try to fix it
Trying to repair it
Any way you can
I'm diving off the deep end
You become my best friend
I wanna love you
But I don't know if I can
I know something is broken
And I'm trying to fix it
Trying to repair it
Any way I can

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh...

You and me are floating on a tidal wave...
Together
You and me are drifting into outer space...
And singing

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh...

You and me are floating on a tidal wave...
Together
You and me are drifting into outer space
You and me are floating on a tidal wave...
Together
You and me are drifting into outer space...
And singing

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh...

"Trying hard to speak and fighting with my weak hand..."

Eh? Eh?

Okay, I've got to post this. It's Light Surrounding You by Evermore. It gives me pangs of pain when I hear it, because it is so good for Doctor/Rose. Watch for references to Doomsday, The Satan Pit, Rose, and Parting of the Ways. If you know a little bit about Series Four, you might also find a link there.

I see you by the water
Your toes dipped in the sand
I thought that it was over
I thought you'd understand
But the feeling is returning
Though time has made us change
And I understand if you don't
Wanna talk to me about it
Tonight
Tonight

Cos I see the light surrounding you
So don't be afraid of something new

Time was overtaking me
And I guess I was confused
They were all inviting me
But I wish I had refused
Cos I'd been there before
And I've seen it all
And I believe in you

And if you never had my heart
I would've never called you back
At the start that night
And I want you to know

That I see the light surrounding you
So don't be afraid of something new
Cos I see the light surrounding you
So don't be afraid of what you're turning into

Blue-eyed sun shines on me
In the morning
Can't help but feel a little cold
Thinking of you

Cos I see the light surrounding you
So don't be afraid of something new
Cos I see the light surrounding you
So don't be afraid of what you're turning into
No, don't be afraid
Don't be afraid
Cos I see the light
Cos I see the light
Cos I see the light surrounding you
