Just finished listening to The Skull of Sobek. You guys should give the adventure a listen.
Marc Platt's writing style does not lend itself easily to casual listening and as such requires the full attention of the Big Finish devotee. The Skull of Sobek is no exception to this factor. What we are presented with here is a rich textured multilayered story of the sort so often sadly missing from the new series of Doctor Who. RTD believes that dark is not the way to go with Doctor Who. In this he is wrong only to be evidenced by such stories as Human Nature and Blink. Moments of light are acceptable but only to highlight the dark.
What would be interesting would be to see this story made for television. This complete story lends itself well to subsequent listening and is perhaps enhanced in this respect. Let's hope we get many more adventures by Marc Platt.

Marc Platt's work for Big Finish is always good.
Compared to the earlier stories in the current round of 8th Doctor stories from Big Finish, this was was the best so far (in my opinion). The earlier one this series lacked some depth, almost like the author thought down only to the level the story was being told on, but no deeper. With The Skull of Sobek, there appears to be a world that could be explored, or at least revisited.
Thumbs up from me... |

Broadcast on BBC7 on November 9 2008.
Interesting for the Doctor and Lucie on a blue planet.
Likes Lucie's line of "Oh brother, oh Brother."
Like the Doctor's line about little imbalances that makes life interesting as well when he says Lucie in hallucinate.
Very shocking on what ultimately happens to Dannahill.
Also shocking on the champion who was chosen to fight the Doctor.
Funny moment when the Doctor came out under the table.
Very good execution from this very good script from Marc Platt.
Beyond The Vortex: Rock Around The Croc:
Very funny title this..
Quite interesting when Nick Briggs said it was originally intended for a road story in futuristic Earth but was dropped as it was too similar to the TV episode Gridlock.
Quite nice to hear Briggs mentioning Bob Holmes when he said that Marc Platt's stories were like Holmes' of something that is unrelated to the reality world could be made so believable.
Very funny when someone said "Sobek, Sobek, Sobek, where's the toilet?"(!) |
