Recently, the BBC announced plans to sell Television Centre, the building from which much of their televisual output has originated since 1960.
The BBC has estimated that they could raise 80 million pounds from the sale, which would go towards the building of new studios at Salford, which is near Manchester, and the renovation of Broadcasting House to include television as well as radio (This is a similar arrangement to the ABC's National Headquarters at Ultimo in Sydney).
British Heritage has now announced plans to urge the Department of Media, Culture and Sport to impose Grade II preservation measures on certain parts of the building, such as studios, the BBC canteen and the Blue Peter garden.
Such an order would mean that permission would be required to undertake any kind of alterations to the building. This would lessen developer's interest in purchasing the site.
British Heritage's heritage protection director, Peter Beacham, has been quoted as saying:
'This building is not just architectually important. As one of the first purpose-built television studios in the world, it represents the moment when Britain led Europe into the television age.
So far the Beeb have taken a relaxed attitude, saying that they are "happy" to talk with the other parties involved.
