Once more, TV only!

The last alien menace introduced to the series that has managed to make it past three appearances, the Sontarans first appeared on our screen in the late 70s.

For me, it's The Time Warrior without a doubt. Not only does it introduce my favourite companion ever, I also think the Sontaron in this story was never bettered. By the time we get to The Two Doctors, instead of stocky, powerfully built creatures we get tall, wobbly-headed jokes instead. I think the Sontarons looked worse in each succesive outing, although the change from Time Warrior to Experiment is not very marked.

I enjoy almost everything about this story - Pertwee is great, Sladen looks great and the period setting is quite fun. This is (unfortunately) the only Pertwee story I taped from the recent screenings of Who, because I enjoy it so much. Mind you, circumstances prevented me from taping Who before then, but I wish I'd been able to tape them all. I've managed to get everything from Robot onwards so far, except for ep 3 of Image of the Fendahl. Sad

In the Invasion of time the Doctor is plugged into the matrix to help him solve their current problem. Does anyone know if the Wakowski brothers watched Doctor Who? Or is this an amazing coincidence?

This is the second time the Doctor had been plugged into the Matrix. The first was in 'The Deadly Assasin'.

The Invasion of Time. It was especially fun when the Sontaran was in the TARDIS.

Never did like Time Warrior. The Sontaran Experiment isn't bad. The Two Doctors may have looked good the first time around but not so with repeated viewings.

I had to go for The Time Warrior.
I found The Sontaran Experiment silly and dull, and The Invasion of Time immemorable. The Two Doctors came a close second, but it could have been just about any bad guy in that, with the exception of the Daleks.

I'd be ambivalent about the reappearance of Sontarans in the new series, but I'd love to see Draconians and/or Ice Warriors!

Probably The Time Warrior. One of the better Pertwee stories in my opinion and the introduction of Sarah Jane Smith Smile

Has to be Time Warrior, I didnt mind Experiment but I found Invasion of Time to be dull and the only thing going for the Two Doctors is Frazer and Troughton

An Amazing coincidence. Look at it. THere are only so many words and ways to describe things. So its nothing more than coincidence that the W bros used that word.. and remember they are American and maybe didnt even know that Dr Who existed anyway.

Remember their target audience was young adult to teenager and in America so the chance of any of them knowing Dr Who is so remote as to be unlikely.

As a person who likes every chance he can get to see Gallifrey Invasion of Time was my favorite. Go D-Mat gun!

It's not really a big surprise to find two different sources describing a reality inside a computer network as 'the Matrix'.

Way back when, FidoNet was established to allow computer hobbyists to exchange emails and files and participate in discussion groups. The Opus bulleting boards system referred to FidoNet as 'the Matrix'. It's a term that stuck, and has resurfaced later. For instance, John Quarterman wrote a book called The Matrix - a comprehensive book on the history, technology, and people of computer networks worldwide.

These uses themselves probably relate back to the mathematical/computing use of the term 'matrix', as a collection of numbers arranged into fixed rows and columns. By extension, it became a collection data rather than numbers, and so on to a collection of data sources.

Whether or not there's a connection between the use of the term in Doctor Who and The Matrix is probably open to speculation (given the number of fingers that would have been in the pie of the Wacowski brothers' movie, it wouldn't be surprising if someone had seen Doctor Who!), the use of the term derives from a common history in maths and computing.

Had to go for Time Warrior - 1) introduces the Sontarans, 2) introduces Sarah Jane Smith, 3) good costume drama and 4) it has Pertwee in it.

datum sources

From the online Dictionary:

Usage Note: The word data is the plural of Latin datum, “something given,” but it is not always treated as a plural noun in English. The plural usage is still common, as this headline from the New York Times attests: “Data Are Elusive on the Homeless.” Sometimes scientists think of data as plural, as in These data do not support the conclusions. But more often scientists and researchers think of data as a singular mass entity like information, and most people now follow this in general usage. Sixty percent of the Usage Panel accepts the use of data with a singular verb and pronoun in the sentence Once the data is in, we can begin to analyze it. A still larger number, 77 percent, accepts the sentence We have very little data on the efficacy of such programs, where the quantifier very little, which is not used with similar plural nouns such as facts and results, implies that data here is indeed singular.
