What do people make of this (Season 25) 1988 story written by Graeme Curry?

This is the analysis from the official BBC website (WARNING! SPOILERS): http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/happinesspatrol/analysis.shtml

Very interested to see if again after all these years.
(I've got it on tape but haven't watched it since the original broadcast).

While I remember the generall appearance of the episodes I can't say I recall much about the story. What I do recall is James Valintine, (then host of the afternoon show), giving it a right old bagging.

I don't mind this one. I like the Candyman and the Doctor is starting to get a little more mysterious Smile

Not sure about this one. I think it would be better WITHOUT the Candyman. Might work better as a musical? Razz

i really like it, it's like a creepy nightmare, with the weird creatures, nonsensical society, and my god! dark atmospheric lighting!

Three words....

WORST

STORY

EVER

I didn't put a vote in. To rate it as highly as turkey would be an insult to the other stories I put in this category. I know we all have differing opinions on various stories, and even the ones I don't like, I can see why others rate it. I can't see that with Happiness Patrol. I'm embarrassed to be reminded that this story exists and would happily have every single copy in existence burnt in exchange for a 30 second snippet of ANY currently missing episode.

Actually, forget the 30 second clip. I'd just happily have every single copy burnt. The story is a disgrace to the series.

This ones a turkey. The Candyman was the lamest thing Who has ever produced. A man made of Candy with wires in the back? Thats worse than the Silurians, even if his face was animated. It has soooo little believeablity. And added to this story's already hard to accept society that will only accept happiness. While the idea has been done in other sci fis (I cant name any though) it was just ridiculous with those flitty hairstyles, costumes and the Kandyman.
I dont usually vote Turkey but this one just doesnt do it for me. (and it was close to fair but not close enough)

and so is Sylvestor McCoy, these repeats are my first ever viewing of him as the Doc but so far I haven't been impressed! Wasn't a big fan of Colin Baker either but at least some of his stories were good ....maybe if the ABC had shown Baker & McCoy up against the Daleks they may have interested me a little more ...Who know?

A couple of weeks left and no more doctor who, it has to get better towards the end??

I see I am the only one who knows Georgina Hale (Daisy K) as Tabitha Bag in the T-Bag series.

Funny that the Doctor sings the song As Time Goes By, as the ABC showed the program As Time Goes By just 90 minutes after this episode ended. The voiceover during the closing credits even mentions that show.

Nice line from the Doctor to cap off the story, "Happiness will prevail."

Didn't think much of this one. Someone wants the whole world to be happy just like her and anyone who isn't happy, gets killed? STUPID!! This is similar to a Star Trek DS9 episode where a female who hates technology plans to crash her crowded space-craft on a planet just so the population will obey her ideals of no technology. Anyone caught using it, gets punished. Paradise Towers was better than this story.

the Pink tardis and Ace calling the doctor "Professor"
it's good cause it will confuse the people watching it that don't know much about it, When there just channel-surfing

Sixteen (?) years later and I actually liked this one.
I may be the only one.
Yes, yes I know, "worst story ever". Which is fine.
We all like and dislike different things.

I would suggest that those who don't like it read the analysis from "Doctor Who: The Television Companion" before you watch it again.
(Yes, yes I know, "I'll never watch that one again, it's rubbish ....").

I was just happy to see a story where we didn't have to sit through, (as Douglas would say), "some bug-eyed monster trying to take over the universe for no adequately explored reason".

The story works and exist on a number of levels.
The sets look fake. That's the point. The whole society is fake.
Government control is total. Do as you are told. Don't question authority.
Be happy or else. Or else you will disappear. fear rules.
Those on top care nothing for those on the bottom.

It's a reflection of what has happened in the past; and what is happening again now. Look around you.

There have been many bad Doctor Who stories over the decades.
This isn't one of them. Yes, I agree it's not brillant, (a panetary unrising on a tv budget?), but it's not as bad as you may believe.

I think the bagging James V gave this one, all those years ago was a bit unfair ....

As a small aside. In this episode the Doctor mentions that his nickname at Uni was "Theta Sigma". (Mmmm ... ). Just glancing through my 1972 Piccolo edition of "The Making Of Doctor Who", (with Jon Pertwee*** on the cover), I noticed in the section called "A Summary of the Travels of .... known as The Doctor", "The Doctor" is reffered to as: (as closely as I can make out)

"Delta Cubed Sigma Chi Squared"

***That edition of "The Making of Doctor Who" was re-released in a heavierly revised edition by Target, (same sized book), in 1976 with a Drawing of Tom Baker on the cover.

Yes, you probably are. I've never heard of "T-Bag".
Is this one of those shows that you can only watch if you're one of the 12% of australians who can afford cable?

As for the works of Georgina Hale:
see: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0354914/

You know I bet you could type in the name of every actor who's ever appeared in DW and get a result on that site.

"Fascinating Captain ..."

Hey Considering the average australian spends over apparently 10 bucks a week on alcohol , and I think Foxtel is like 50 a month for the basic stuff... its not that much a lean. On average its probably cheaper to get cable in Aus than say America or England.
