Alfonso Cuaron is the director of the age, in my opinion. The Prestige was my movie of the year until I saw CoM. And what a cast - Owen is awesome, Michael Caine plays his finest part for ages, and even the smaller roles, like John Huston, are cast perfectly.
In my opinion this is the best sci fi film since Bladerunner. Infact, it's the Bladerunner of the new millennium.
I could bang on about its existential nature, the amazing sociological philosophy behind it and the authenticity of its dystopian vision, but I may start foaming at the mouth. I'd be interested to hear what other people thought of it. |
Some of the shots in that movie are amazing. There are two parts that seem to be one shot [without cuts] and go for a really long time. The first is when they get ambushed by the rebel guys, and the other one is when Owen's character is running through the war zone to get into the building. During that shot blood splatters on the lens and stays there for quite a while, and any cuts would have been blatantly obvious. |
Mmm... that seems to be a Cuaron trait - if you watch Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, he does the same thing when they're running through the forest away from the wolf. And yes, that movie is STILL by far the best directed of all of them. So much better.
Apart from what's already been mentioned, bits I loved: the use of songs (Radiohead's 'Life in a Glasshouse' was just perfect, lyrically too, for that mood, and Aphex Twin's "zen" function was hilarious); and the usage of Guernica was incredible. Considering the grittiness and war-stricken places you see later, the fact that an upper class house just happens to have Guernica stuck on its wall just disturbed me greatly. Brilliant. Utterly brilliant. |

I think the calibre of the leads is promising, as is the fact that this time Hulk's got the Abomination to fight. That's all good.
But, for some inexplicable reason, I still have a feeling this is going to be a dud...

Saw two animated movies, the first was Ratatouille last night and the other I just saw in the cinema was Horton Hears A Who!
Both were very enjoyable although the latter looked flat at the start but does pick up as it progresses. |

Even though it is not officially released until May 1 but a review of the Iron Man movie was in the Sydney Sunday Telegraph three days ago.
Reviewer Ben McEachen gave it three and a half stars but says to "battle a bothersome sense of being underwhelmed". |

Just saw Iron Man and there was an extra scene after the credits.

As to the movie itself it is pretty good. Gwyneth Paltrow really surprised me with her performance as Pepper Potts and what a shock hearing the final line before the credits came in. |

| Damn! The ironman extra scene was removed because of copyright and I loved Ironman it being the first good movie Ive seen since spiderman 2 but I walked out right after the song finished. SO now Ill never see it. |
