Thought this was great. Various references to the Devil..something the Doctor calculated was 6.66 recurring IIRC.
Actually found myself drawing similarities between this episode and the movie Event Horizon.
-Both set on space stations/settlements.
-Supernatural dawn of time evil aspects in both.
-Characters become possessed by the evil.....some get sucked out into the surrounding atmosphere (or in the case of TIP a lack thereof).
-Perhaps loosely, the captain of both expiditions are of African descent.
-Black Holes!

I found this one of the better episodes of Series 2. The Ood were cool (though at first, kinda pointless) and the Beast was freaky. But for me, the highlight was Rose and the Doctor discussing buying a house and Rose suggesting they live together. Just imagine, the Doctor sitting on the couch reading the paper and Rose coming in after work. Another highlight was when she kissed him goodbye. I had tears creeping out. Matt Jones really got a hold of the chemistry between them and set it on high.
I said this last week and no one replied. I'm saying it again though:
THE OOD LOOK LIKE DR. ZOIDBERG!

I must admit when she was talking about buying a house and all that, Tennant/Doctor had a "I dont think so" look on his face.
I also think that this was exemplified when he was asking about his TARDIS, with a distinct note of desperation in his voice.
I felt that these elements also increased the recurring themes of the lonely nature of the Doctor and the fact that also, he is a wanderer. |

It would be too delicious to think it was planned that way, but I do hope so. |

I loved this episode!! It reminded me so much of the old school Doctor Who episodes with aliens, freaky things happening and the black hole which meant they weren't on Earth for once yay! About time. Great chemistry between Rose and the Doctor, and I was surprised that they lost the TARDIS so they ended up trapped. Didn't see that coming.
I can't wait for the conclusion now! Definitely better than last week's episode. |

First of all I hope everybody has been enjoying Father's Day. Just incidentally the Paul Cornell episode of that name was the eighth episode of the 2005 season just as The Impossible Planet is the eighth episode of this year's season.
Finally got to see the ad with the Planet Earth music just half an hour before it began.
Playing Zachary is Shaun Parkes. He was David Tennant's co-star in Casanova. He was his manservant Rocco. Probably explains why the Doctor decided to hug Zachary!!!
Scooty is very pretty which is why I hated it when she got killed off.
Love the use of the Bolero music for this episode.
I actually saw the episode before last month but the sight of the writing on Toby's body still gave me a shock.
The music is brilliant.
The voice of the Beast is Gabriel Woolf, Sutekh in the Fourth Doctor serial Pyramids of Mars. In Pyramids of Mars the Fourth Doctor mentioned that Satan was one of the other names that Sutekh was known by. I have noticed other people have been speculating whether the Beast is actually Sutekh.
When I watched this the first time, did not get to enjoy it very much as lot of people were talking about what was going on. So upon watching it again, I enoyed much much more and my eyes were definitely transfixed to the screen in the lead-up to the cliffhanger.
I was not really expecting to see the Next Time trailer at the end as I thought it would be the same with Rise of the Cybermen in which nothing was revealed about the concluding episode. |

Not silly? Well, you do realise the world was destroyed on August 22nd 2006, so it doesn't really matter anymore does it.

I received the official BBC DVD some weeks back.
And as my new medication was giving me some issues, (don' ask), I watched both episodes back to back last night, (2nd time), and wound down with "Love & Monsters".
While both "The Impossible Planet" & "The Satan Pit" are very good, there are just one or two moments I found where poorly done, reducing the tension, excitement and believability of the story. I'll wait until after "The Satan Pit" before mentioning them. Viewers with a keen eye and mind should('ve) spot(ed) them without too much trouble. |

| I loved the chemistry between The Doctor and Rose in this one. Up until now I had felt that there was less between The 10th Doctor and Rose then the 9th and Rose. They got on great but there just seemed less intensity. Perhaps it's just that Rose seems so less likable this time around. Or maybe the writers are working towards Rose's exit or it's probably just me. |

This was the best new series episode in a while - the Cybermen were good but this just beat them. I'm hoping The Satan Pit lives up to the promise set.
That said, I was a bit sick of the Doctor/Rose relationship here. They'll have to settle down and get a house... together. Or not. Bleargh. Get on with the story, dammit! Maybe I'm just cynical but these scenes failed to induce sympathy in me.
Everything else was great though. The flash of Satan on the screen, the death of Scooty, the floating body of Scooty in space... and the awesome looking black hole. The plot may not be original in a way, but the style more than makes up for it. Excellent!
That said, the "we must feed" bit was a little bit silly. Regardless of whether they meant it another way, it was so blatantly suspicious that I can't help but wonder why neither the Doctor nor Rose commented on it later. |
