I was thinking of making a sci-fi/fantasy movie thread, but I thought, why be exclusive? There's any number of films I'm really looking forward to coming out this year, and some even next year I think, and I was wondering what other people are looking forward to.
My list:
A Scanner Darkly
V for Vendetta -->these two are the most highly anticipated.
Ultraviolet
X-Men 3
Spider-Man 3 (2007?)
Transformers (if it ever gets made)
I can't think of any others right now. Oh yeah, the reason why I originally was going to post was for a link to a new trailer for X3 which looks very cool...but I am a comic book fan.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/tls/trailer/
And here's a link for the second Scanner Darkly trail (needs Quicktime):
http://www.apple.com/trailers/warner_independent_pictures/ascannerdarkly/trailer2/
So, anyone else? What movies are people looking forward to, or what have you seen recently that was good? |

| Well I am keen to see the Get Smart movie starring Steve Carrell that is scheduled to be filmed later this year. Will he be just as good as Don Adams. |

Yeah, I was just reading last night that Transformers was going ahead. Looking ofrward to that one!
I'm also curious to see what the new Superman film will be like. Hopefully they'll be going for some really awe-inspiring visuals; it's Superman, after all. |

| I wholey agree with you, Charlie. Hugh Jackman was a second choice, apparently - he would have been the better choice, I think (even though he is an Aussie) |

I don't really keep up with what's coming up, but I would be very keen to see A Scanner Darkly.
My dream movie would be a version of the novels Dr Futurity or Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said.
I was looking through the paper yesterday and saw that The Pink Panther is currently screening. I'm finding that although I am a huge fan of the originals and of Peter Sellars, I have no desire whatsoever to see this remake. I don't feel it's possible to successfully remake this one. Not with Steve Martin at any rate. Pahlease!
I did go and see Memoirs of a Geisha last night. That was quite good, but typical Spielberg in many parts. I was a little disappointed when I saw 'Amblin' across the screen in the opening credits.
I also saw Crash the day before (Oscars curiosity has grabbed me), and while it was a great movie, it wasn't what I would class as a 'Best Picture'. The other offerings must have been pretty ordinary. |

| Well, I saw Brokeback Mountain, which didn't jump out at me and state "Hell, yeah, I deserved 5 Oscars" I quote Eric Cartman here and say "It was about nothing but gay cowboys sitting around eating pudding" |

I saw Proof tonight, with Gwneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and to quote my wife, "some other spunky guy".
I'd just seen Hopkins yesterday in an episode of Department S.
Proof was nothing to rave about, but enjoyable nonetheless. |

Mike, should that trailer make sense if I have no familiarity with the first two Final Destination films? On one viewing it doesn't....at least, not to me.
I've not seen many films recently. The last I saw was Brokeback Mountain...my sister's turn to choose the film, and she drools over Jake Gyllenhaal. I was surprised by the suddenness of the first physical encounter between the two central characters, but as Arturo recently said to me,
"Have you never said, 'Bugger me, it's cold tonight!'?" |

| Saw Tristan and Isolde yesterday featuring the lovely Sophia Myles who will soon be seen in Doctor Who in The Girl In the Fireplace. Overall I thought it was ok and a very sad story. |

I saw V for Vendetta today. I found it to be very powerful, and, at times, emotionally compelling.
I'm not sure why Alan Moore demanded they not credit him with having written the story this film was based on. I think the film remained as true to the source material as could be reasonably expected, and it certainly seemed, to me, to carry the themes from the Graphic Novel/comics very well.
The comics contained a greater diversity in characterisation, and also focused on a greater number of characters, IIRC. I simply don't think this could have been carried off successfully in film, where there are certain time constraints within which the producers must work. There have been changes made to the overall plot, especially towards the end, but once again, I think these were necessary and, for the most part, did not compromise the themes found in the original work.
I was most impressed with Natalie Portman's acting. Having only seen her previously in those awful prequels, I wasn't sure how well she could actually act. This film has put any such doubts to rest.
I'm not doing a very good job at reviewing this film, am I? It had plenty of action, quite a bit of fairly black humour, and some great dialogue. The anti-establishment, pro-think-for-yourself themes were nicely developed and well illustrated, with the background of totalitarian-ruled England providing a perfect stage for the exploration of these ideas. The conclusion is both a logical development of the story, and a satisfying one, I found. I'm extremely happy that they never revealed V's face...and apologies to anyone who considers that a spoiler.
To anyone who sees this film and finds it a powerful tale I would heartily recommend the comics, which go into much greater depth and detail, and which offer what I found to be a more satisfying explanation for the (possible/probable) identity of V. V for Vendetta fully lived up to the very high expectations I had going into the cinema, and I plan to see it again next week. I've seen it said elsewhere that anyone who dislikes George W. Bush is likely to enjoy this flick, and I agree with that sentiment. If this describes you, then go see this film! |

General reason: he considers himself an artist and his published material are works of art. He doesn't believe they can be properly expressed in a different medium - the messages intended are lost.
As a rule he accepts no money from the films based on his work. Any money due his he has paid to teh artist(s) who worked the original stories.
Specific reasons: he didn't want this foilm made, and says that Warner Bros tricked the rights to it away from him, so he had no say. Then there was a media release which contained something claimed as a quote from Moore, which he never said - and Warners refused to retract it or apologise.
You want to know more? Try here. (And there's plenty more Moore out there on the internet...) |

| I saw A History Of Violence the other day. Excellent film. I am also curious to see the re-make of The Hills Have Eyes. Although generally these sort of re-makes are pretty bad. |
