|
|
I've only just now been alerted to the thread elsewhere on this forum about The Chaser's "Fan of Doctor Who" song, as broadcast on our series on the ABC (and viewable on youtube.com for those lucky enough to have missed it).
I claim full responsibility for the writing of that piece, and I must admit I'm surprised that some fans seemed to find it so offensive they'd wish to banish me to the universe of anti-time. So surprised in fact that I figured I'd do this post (my first) to declare my innocence, in the perhaps mistaken belief that anyone remotely cares. So feel free to stop reading now...
Part of The Chaser's schtick is self-deprecation and "Fan of Doctor Who" is exactly that. I intended it to be a sort of loving tribute in the same spirit as those Gatiss/Walliams sketches, if only one-twentieth as clever.
Thanks for pointing out the inaccuracy of my calling "Scream of the Shalka" interactive. I inserted the word "interactive" in an effort to make the reference sound more obscure, but yes, it wasn't interactive was it.
I did indeed get my "Web Planet" DVD signed by Barbara Joss. I'm rather spooked that anyone noticed, actually.
Apologies therefore to those who may have taken the admittedly obtuse style of Chaser satire the wrong way. Far from condemning DW fandom, my intention was to celebrate it in all its glorious fat-arsed oddness. I challenge anyone to deny my own obsession with Who - just last night I listened to Ep 2 of "Singularity". Great to see Turlough's character getting a proper run for its money.
All the best,
Andrew Hansen.

I loved it too! I hope we will see you at more DWCA events too!
I've also loved your work on the Chaser this year! It is the highlight of my week (after Doctor Who of course!).
I wasn't sure about the supermodel face off last week though. Still having Kate Fischer lick cream off your face must be an interesting experience! |

I must have loved it, since I included a quote in my sig block.
Nice to see you here, Andrew.
I was going to change my underpants and sig block, but they've just got a new lease of life! |

I loved it.
I laughed and laughed.
It was the funniest thing I'd seen until the "Al Kyder" joke, nearly coughed up a lung with that one ..... |

Ironically I've been laughing about the Chaser all day because of Greer's comments on Steve Irwin - remembering the "what will that crazy Germaine Greer say next?" segment on CNNNN, of which I have the DVD. I've also got the Annual. If you come back on Andrew, was the bit with the "D*lek" also written by you? If so (and even if not), it was hilarious.
Self-deprecation is great, but I'm shocked that people took offence at all. Even if someone makes fun of a Doctor Who fan with real intent to hurt, surely the best response is to proudly say "I am a Who fan" and let criticism bounce off you because you alone know the allure of the best program in the entire universe.
The Chaser, I salute you. |

OK folks. We've lulled him into a false sense of security.
If we can now just find ourselves a handy-dandy TCE we may have a little fun coming our way.
Mmmmbwahahahahaha

Rabbits! What just came over me? I think I may be chanelling someone!!!!!

Sorry to resurrect this thread for a reason that has nothing to do with Doctor Who but...
Last night I saw the Radiohead-No Surprises tribute on My Favourite Album. And it was hysterical! One of the funniest things I've ever seen. Andrew, if you ever read this, can you PLEASE upload it onto youtube and provide a link to it in this thread?! Seriously, such genius cannot be played once on TV and forgotten. There's so many of my friends I have to show.
*Butt-licking off*
And tell Chas it's "Fitter Happier", not "Fitter Stronger". Haha. |

Andrew,
I think the funniest aspect is that some might think that it was a documentary as Who fans tend to get worst press than even the Trekkies!
I still pissed myself and any adverse reaction probably has more to do with certain pockets of Who fandom being more than a little hyper-sensitive.
I watched the sketch with my wife and incidently I don't find it hard to get a screw though I'm a fan of Doctor Who!
Cheers,
Smurf |

So did I. Satire is a clever way of doing humour, the thanks has to go all the way back to Peter Cook. What a brilliant fellow he was! |

Anyone looking to see the clip again, I was looking through the Chaser's ABC site and found that it was in the video archive. I think it the address is
abc.net.au/chaser
I hadn't seen it, and I couldn't help cracking up. Even though I'm still relatively new to Who (oo, lovely rhyming...) I was in stitches... It's not just relevant to Dr Who, but also to anything people are passionate about. Ten outta Tennant! (Oh god. I need to go to bed...) |
