While Doctor Who is a great show, they do seem to be forgetting that the TARDIS can travel through time and space. Here are the locations for each episode of Series One:

- London
- Platform 1
- Cardiff
- London
- London
- Utah
- Satellite 5
- London

- Cardiff
- Satellite 5

A bit repetitive, don't you think?

Yeah I agree, I'm beginning to find it repetitive. However, I read somewhere that it was Russell T. Davies' decision to make them stay on Earth. I suspect it's got something to do with Torchwood as they can't really reference to Torchwood if they're out in space, off somewhere else as it appears to be an Earth based thing.

I think it's more important for the time travel. The show has always centred around Earth and the time travel is most important. The new series is proof because it almost never leaves Earth and the show still works. Of course it is getting a little boring but at least it hasn't reached the extreme that Pertwee suffered through. But I heard they're leaving Earth this week (for the first time since greatest show)

Davies' view applied in the first series and it has nothing to do with Torchwood. I could go digging to find a quote, but there's so much he has said on the show that I'm not fussed. Essentially, his view was that the viewers are more likely to care about what happens on Earth than on some imaginary planet with a made-up name, and their more likely to care about what happens to humans than to an imaginary alien race.

It's far from the first time such a view has been expressed, as it echoes Jon Pertwee's view about it being scarier coming home to find a Yeti on the loo in Tooting Bec than anything happening on the planet Zarg.

It's an attempt to appeal to a broader TV audience than a narrow base of Doctor Who fans.

I personally wouldn't mind more visits to other planets.

That's one of my favourite quotes from any doctor; Jon said it numerous times in numerous interviews, but his camp, precise tone made it sound so
quaintly British.

I think the time is ripe now for a trip into the far reaches. Let's put the sci-fi element back into the show. The Pertwee exile period was a great idea that just went on too long.

I agree that it hits closer to home when they are on Earth, but there is only so much they can do with Earth before it feels like they've set Earth up to the most dangerous planet in the galaxy as we seem to attract all the trouble! Some exploration to other planets would be great, even if it was just a few episodes per season.

Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space

Time first. Internal size second, space third.

But please, way more Space in series three.

I believe RTD said that it basically comes down to MONEY.
So expect lots more human/earth based stories.
If well written and entertaining that's fine by me.

They don't have to use huge amounts of CGI and lots of rubber suits to locate a story off planet.

Impossible Planet/Satan Pit was basically filmed in a quarry (yay!), the Ood were fairly simple prosthetics and all identical and the station was a recycled set from an earlier show.

Ok the demon was a pretty intensive CGI monster, but they don't need a demon in every non-earth story.

The black hole was a more or less static effect.

Take out the demon and the episode would have cost about the average to make.

New Earth was on an alien planet with alien protagonists, very little CGI and not much cost to make. The story could have been better, but throwing money at it wouldn't have done that.

In series one, Bad Wolf and Parting of the Ways were Earth based (more or less) and cost a bomb in CGI.

No, locating a story off Earth with alien species needn't cost a whole lot of money. I would like to see a better balance of Earth/Non-Earth stories is all.

One thing though, I really love the Earth History stories. Charles Dickens, Queen Victoria. I loved them.

I've just had an idea for the next (2007) Christmas Special.

Something that gets Doctor Who away from the UK without having to spend lots of money, and brings in alien locals.

Set the show in BRISBANE!

Shoot a couple of locations over a weekend in Brissie. Get a cameo by one of the Australian companions (what's that you say, there was only one Aussie companion? Oh, why thank you! Laughing ) Or use that horse trainer lady. Tommy Smith's daughter.

Do the rest in Wales in studio sets with a whole lot of ex-pat Australian actors. Have Charlene fron Neighbours do a cameo.

The Aus filming would be at a really cold time in the UK, so DT et al could go back with a tan.

The aliens are of course the population of the gold coast. All those plastic people can't be entirely human. Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad

I'm quite happy to be a consultant on the show as well. I can even sign over my first born child as surety.

Any takers?
