Latest rumour for series three is that The Rani is to Return played by Zoe someoneorother from footballers wives. This has been kicked about Og forums and reported in The Sun, which broke rumours of SJS's return and the Dalek/Cyberman war for series two.

Do we believe it????

if they're bringing back an "evil" renegade timelord let it be The Master. as played by Alan Rickman.

I'd prefer neither, but of the two, the Rani would be better. The Master is a tired old cliche who's had far too many canonical deaths to be able to cheat it yet again. The Rani, on the other hand, is a tired old cliche who wasn't used as much and presumably had to wait for the time war to meet her absolute final end.

Plus, of course, one of the Sun's primary sources for Doctor Who news, as well as the BBC themselves and the actors concerned, is Outpost Gallifrey. A rumour started on there can get out of hand and appear in the papers as fact, and then gets reported back to OG as such, confirming itself.

The Doctor has a son?

News Dated: 10/8/2006

This is currently to be taken with a large pinch of salt, but the tabloid newspapers today, printed articles claiming a big shock is in store at the end of Series Three. Having hinted on being a grandfather in Series 2, The Doctor will apparantly reveal that he has a son in the Finale.

The news is also supposed to be a solution to the whole 'what happens to The Doctor after his 12th regeneration' question. Apparantly the son will take over the role of The Doctor.

Make of it what you wll, but DWO believe this to be a very red herring!

Return of The Rani?

According to Thursday 3rd August's copy of The Sun newspaper; Footballer's Wive's star; Zoe Lucker is set to play The Rani in Series Three of Doctor Who. The Rani (originally played by Kate O Mara) was a female Timelord in the Classic Series, who appeared in two stories: The Mark of the Rani & Time and the Rani.

Evil Zoe takes on Dr Who

FOOTBALLERS’ Wives star Zoe Lucker is being lined up to play Doctor Who’s evil arch-enemy The Rani.

Show bosses are bringing back the terrible Time Lady, who was originally played by Kate O’Mara in the 1980s.

And sexy Zoe — superbitch Tanya Turner in racy ITV1 hit Footballers’ Wives — is a dead cert for the part.

An insider said: “The Rani was a classic character — pure evil. She’s ripe for a return and Zoe is perfect to play her. There are similarities between The Rani and bitchy Tanya.”

The Rani is a time traveller like the Doctor but channels her energy into evil — a scientific genius who creates monsters.

TV sex symbol O’Mara — who turns 67 next Thursday — featured as The Rani in two special serials in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

She also played Joan Collins’s sister Caress in US drama Dynasty and was on our screens in Five soap Family Affairs last year.

Doctor Who chiefs are writing the third in the revamped series of the BBC1 show and more classic characters could return.

The last series saw comebacks for the Cybermen, K-9 and Sarah Jane.

Is it coincidence that the 6th Doctor adventure The Mark of the Rani is due for release on DVD later this year?

The idea of the Doctor having a son is an old one - it was suggested by William Hartnell when he was playing the lead role. The idea was that the son would look exactly like his father (and, of course, be played by Hartnell) but be evil. Maybe the idea has come to fruition, 40 years later?

Am I the only one who thought the Rani was the least convincing, most over-the-top comic-book style villain in the whole Dr Who ouevre? She was like Catwoman played by Roger Moore. A tight bodysuit, grey bangs and the occasional sneer don't make for a prize-winning nemesis. I guess the two stories she appeared in didn't help her cause, but still....
How long can the show's writers fall prey to this revivalist obsession? We need new ideas, new creatures ... remember the Pertwee/Baker era, when there were fresh, interesting aliens and enemies with just about every story!

I think Patrick Troughton was probably the most accomplished actor to play the part, and I'm not sure Tom Baker acted at all, he merely played himself on screen.

but that's my opinion only, and we're all entitled to our own opinions Smile

I'm not sure that Patrick was the most accomplished actor to play the part. I'd say he was probably the most successful serious actor to play it, but I'd say that Tom Baker whilst not a better actor played the part better whether he was being himself or not.
oh and DEAR GOD NO DON"T BRING THE RANI BACK!!!
According to Terrance Dicks the Third Doctor was the best at looking rueful.

it wasn't an attempt at a cop-out, it was an attempt at pre-empting the outcry which often follows any criticism of Tom Baker.

my statement was in response to the idea that Tom Baker could be considered the "best actor" this (or any) show had seen. What Tom does might be entertaining, but I don't think it is acting.

to draw a contemporary parallel - I like Jack Black. I see all his movies and I own most of them on DVD. I consider him to be very entertaining but he does not act - he is always the same character, whether in a movie or on stage with Tenacious D.

I also think Colin Baker is "the definitive Big Finish Audio Doctor" but I wasn't aware he was particularly well-known before he took the role - not compared with Davison who was well-established by his role in "All Creatures Great And Small". I know Colin Baker was in "Brothers" and I shouldn't dismiss it on the grounds that I've never seen it. Shame on me.
