"David E. Kelley has landed format rights to buzzworthy BBC series Life on Mars and set it up at as a one-hour drama at ABC, reports Variety.
"Mars," from U.K.-based Kudos Film & Television, revolves around a modern-day police detective who finds himself transported back to 1973. Kelley will write and executive produce the pilot via his company's overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV.
Stephen Garrett and Jane Featherstone of Kudos will also serve as executive producers. ABC has ordered a pilot for fall 2007, with a significant penalty attached if the project doesn't move forward to series.
The project came together relatively quickly following the BBC premiere of "Mars" in January. The U.K. show generated big ratings -- more than 7 million viewers its first night -- and an order for a second season.
"Mars," which takes its title from the David Bowie track, focuses on Det. Sam Tyler, who gets into a near-fatal car wreck shortly after his girlfriend is kidnapped by a serial killer. He wakes up in 1973, still a cop but in a completely alien universe.
Further complicating matters: The first case he tackles in the 1970s seems to have links to the serial killer who nabbed his girlfriend. Viewers don't know whether Sam has gone crazy, traveled through time or is actually still in a coma and dreaming the whole thing. " |

Having originally posted this as news on the US version of Life On Mars, I have now decided to make it the general thread for it after seeing the first five episodes of the UK show at my uni sci fi club last night.
Episodes 4 and 5 is of interest to us Doctor Who fans:
Mary Whitehouse is mentioned in Episode 4 and Doctor Who himself in Episode 5. Although neither 4 or 5 were written by co-creator Matthew Graham, he is now a writer on Doctor Who himself and noticed in the credits the script editor being Elwen Rowlands who also did script editing duties in last year's season of Doctor Who.
So I trust I have now given you a reason to watch Life On Mars if and when it comes on the ABC. |

I suspended my own personal embargo of television to watch Life on Mars, because it looked so promising. I wasn't disappointed. It's great! Interesting that the main character is called Sam Tyler - it seems as though time travellers have to have names from a fairly limited pool - Sam Beckett/Rose Tyler.
To mark the first repeats of the series, on one of their digital channels, the BBC have just had a "1973 week", featuring classic BBC programming from that year - including Jon Pertwee's The Green Death.
They're making a new series for the same time next year, and the first series is due out on DVD (here) in the autumn. I can't wait for either!

On Saturday I emailed the ABC to see if they had the rights for it and I just got a response:
"Dear Matthew
Thank you for your email.
The good news is that we do have the rights to show the 8 episode series, 'Life on Mars', which is a Kudos Rights production. I cannot say when it will be shown as it has not been scheduled yet. I suggest you keep a watch for it by regularly visiting our 'Must See' TV website: http://abc.net.au/tv/

Found out from Simon Hull at Gallifrey that Life On Mars will end after two seasons:
"The Sun today reports that Life on Mars will end after Series 2. Philip Glenister says it's great to go out whilst it's at it's peak." |

No, there is still no sign of Life On Mars being on the ABC but ezydvd.com.au has included it in its database but confusingly it says that the release date is unknown and that it has already been released on August 18, last month!:

| Sunhill Fire at the Gallifrey forum says it is possible that Life On Mars might replace Midsomer Murders when it finishes at the end of October. Either that or Spooks season 4 or something else. |

I just checked the ABC site and the answer is something else. The something else being Blue Murder & A Most Mysterious Murder. |

An indication of when it will be shown:
Sunhill Fire at Gallifrey said that the ABC will be showing the series early next year which he says means anytime before July. |

Last night on the ABC, I saw for the first time State of Play and it featured Life On Mars stars John Simm and Philip Glenister. In Glenister's case he plays a cop in State of Play just like he also does on Life On Mars.
Based on what I saw on the opening episode of State of Play it looks like something good to watch while the wait for Life On Mars continues. |

The following about Part 5 of State of Play shown last night is definitely worth a mention whether it is a coicidence or not:
Cal McCaffrey (Simm) had this funny look on his face at Yvonne Shaps (Geraldine James) and she said something like "Don't look at me as if you had a message from Mars"! |

For those with the appropriate knowledge, access and technology (nudge nudge, wink wink), Season 2 of "Life on Mars" commences on 12th February - hey, that's today!
And along with the big John Sims rumours from the weekend, it seems that Philip Glenister will be in a follow up series to "Life on Mars" set during the 1980's, without John Sims. Make of that as you will. |

In a pleasant surprise a fellow Doctor Who fan has sent me the first season on DVD which I got this morning.
As I mention before I have already saw the first five episodes. Looks like I don't have to wait for the last three episodes of the season to be shown on the ABC.

Have to admit I haven't seen this series, so really don't understand all the fuss about it. Sounds just like all the real hard nosed 70s british "cop" dramas with a slight twist.
For those who are interested you can of course already get the Series 1 boxset from the usual OS online places; and the Series 2 boxset will be released on April 16th 2007. Or if you prefer to wait; the "Series 1 & 2" boxset will be released on the 24th September 2007. (I've been told that the DVD releases have slightly different music in spots for legal reasons).
So, with the ABC "rushing" the series to our screens you might be better off getting the DVDs ................. |

Finally Life On Mars is coming on the ABC. Last night just before The Catherine Tate Show, saw an ad for May and Life On Mars was included.
With Life On Mars coming next month in May, this means that there are now three shows of peripheral interest to us Doctor Who fans (which are not related to Doctor Who itself) to watch. The other two are Robin Hood which already started on the ABC and the soon to be aired on 9 Primeval. |

LOM is finally being shown locally. Mazing ...
Anyone who was really KEEN to see this already has, as both series have been available on DVD, (including a boxed set), from Amazon.co.uk for a very long time.
Along with Robin Hood, and Primeval, which being only 6 episodes and pretty bad is likely to be on and gone before anyone blinks.
And can someone explain why a series like "Robin Hood", a very inaccurate, (let me list the ways), medieval adventure series, that's been told many times before, would of "peripheral interest" to "us Doctor Who fans". If anything, not being SF, it's not likely to interest.
(We "Doctor Who fans" being ecceptionally special and important and Godlike people, much more important than the great unwashed rabble who aren't "Doctor Who fans". "Line them up and shoot them I say". Have I been watching too much Python? No such thing ..... ). |

I have now found out the exact date of Life On Mars debut as Sunhill Fire posted at Gallifrey that it will start on Sunday May 20 8:30pm.
This means that it will be clashing with Grey's Anatomy on 7, a show that I also watch. However personally this doesn't bother me that much at least with the first five episodes of Life On Mars as I have already stated earlier in this thread, I have already seen. |
