|
|
I received the following from a forum member:
Given you wrote we "Doctor Who fans" with the inverted commas, are you trying to say that you are not a Doctor Who fan?
And I thought it might make an interesting discussion for the forum.
What is your definition of a "Doctor Who Fan"?
I'll add my answer at a later date. |

Personally, I just like watching Doctor Who. I like collecting merchandise and old books. I am not really into audios, EDA's, PDA's or whatever else. I don't know who wrote which story or who directed what and I don't over analyze every episode. I just enjoy It. I consider myself a "Fan" |

| I suppose anyone who'd be sad enough to go on a Doctor Who forum - myself included - would be a fan, wouldn't they? There's different levels of fandom, sure. Obsessive fandom, analytical fandom. But it's all fandom. |

Oh dear, how sad do you have to be to be the administrator of a Doctor Who forum, then? (and by 'you' I mean 'me'...)
In any case, back to the original question... what is a Doctor Who fan? The answer is simple. It is when, during hot weather, you stretch your Doctor Who underpants over a small frame with a handle so you can waft air at your self. That's a Doctor Who fan - diamond logo, Tom Baker's face and all!

| Well, I'd like to be an administrator of a Doctor Who forum. Surely that's even sadder. |

i guess when you sum it up so perfectly, what can you add?
i have posters, write fan fics, collect pictures, create my own desktop wallpapers, talk about it with my friends, convert my friends to whovianism (god, sounds like a cult, doesn't it? All hail the almighty Doctor!!), dresses like characters on 'character' free dress day at school, send a letter to a comedian i'm a fan of in an 'ask me' page if THEY like doctor who... hmm... am a member of a forum (was two till one stopped working) and... draw fan art for my walls, use doctor who imges and quotes in school assignments...
i'll stop now i think. basically i think i'm in the 'obsessed category there.
i definitely consider myself a fan! |

*Thinks*
Nah, you don't sound like a fan to me.
Alright, I'm joking. Thanks for that though.
I must admit though, I really don't like the term "Whovian". I wouldn't like to be called a "Time Lord" either, but, you know... I generally just say "Doctor Who fan". I think the other thing is that you say to someone, "I'm a Trekkie" or "I'm a Jedi Knight", they'll know what you mean, but if you say "I'm a Whovian" they won't.
Which comedian did you send the letter to? |

I hate all the nonsense where people try to fit the word 'who' so you know they are talking about Doctor Who. The worst of them all is 'Whoniverse'. Aside from sound just plain dumb, the word 'who' is pretty irrelevant to the show, and the times when it crops up (in The War Machines - 'Doctor Who is required' - The Highlanders - signing a note 'Doctor von Wehr' - and in The Underwater Menace - signing a note 'Doctor W') tend to stand out as feeling very wrong. |

I like 'Whoover' but none of the others.
I don't like Who-niverse but I do like Whoniverse (h-you-niverse)
That was a pretty pointless post but oh well |

For me, being a true Doctor Who fan means that your universe revolves around the show, and that's a definite with me. I spend the majority of my time on FanFiction.Net, either reading Who fanfic or copying Who fanfic into MS Word coz I can't be bothered to read it at that moment (I currently have over 3,000 stories waiting to be read). If I'm not doing that I'm writing fanfic, watching Who vids on YouTube or making Who vids (okay, so I've only made 3).
After each episode airs I'm always straight onto this site to talk about it and see what other people have to say. I also keep a lookout for Doctor Who references and post them as soon as possible.
I've currently had 28 dreams with a Doctor Who theme (I'll probably create a separate forum about them). In 3 of them I've dreamt the classics were on the ABC again at 6pm (I never got to see them), and another 3 have been about Series Three, which I haven't even seen! After seeig Doomsday I had a dream about lots of news reports about people seeing each other for the last time. It was only after waking up that I made the connection.
I painted my wardrobe like the TARDIS, I own 45 Doctor Who books (and will be getting more - I inherited some from my uncle who was a big fan when he was a kid; my local second hand bookshop sometimes receives some too), I have Doctor Who themed covers for my schoolbooks (actually they're all Dr/Rose), I've got a Dalek watch, a sonic screwdriver, the new series on DVD, I stuck the front page of the TV guide on my wall coz it had all 10 Doctors on it, and I kept the article (but I cut out the pics of David Tennant and stuck them in my David Tennant scrap book, which contains lots of pics of him and some amusing, slightly suggestive comments by me) ... need I say more? |

What is your definition of a "Doctor Who Fan"?
I'll add my answer at a later date. |
Actually that should have been "we Doctor Who fans" in quotes. Sorry.
My definition?
Someone who watches and enjoys the show on a regular basis. That's all.
Personally, while I've been watching and enjoying the show since 1965, and while I answer "a bit of a fan" when asked, I'm not obsessed by it.
For me it's been a doorway to many other fields of interest, most not science fiction in any way, which helps one to live a balanced life.
As to why I put "we Doctor Who fans" in quotes?
I don't like being put in a box; it's not who or what I am.
There's more to all of us then being an "us Doctor Who fans".
I suppose the real question is now, why would anyone think that putting "we Doctor Who" fans in quotes implies one is not a "fan"?
So, there you go. More of an answer than you'd ever get from the person who sent me the PM with the original question. Enjoy or not. |

| But what if they don't watch the show, and only enjoy the books, comics and/or audios? I got my cousin into the show through the EDAs. |

It would seem reasonable to say that even if someone didn't like the show that they could still be a fan of doctor who but if you go down that road you would have to say that someone who only liked k9 and co. was also a fan, which I would not be willing to do. |

Well, that would be your, or your cousins answer to the question.

Excellent. That would be your definition.

To be honest the question has as many answers as there are people to ask it too.
JMHO: There's no "right answer". You're probably a fan if you think you are, or say you are. (Provided you're not just saying you are). As can be seen from all the answers there are as many different types of fans and definitions of what a fan is as you can probably imagine. Which means for me there's no "us Doctor Who fans" as there are too many types to clump us all into a single group. |

That's true, but K9 and Company doesn't have the Doctor in it and the EDAs do, so I think my cousin's more legitimate here. Also, god knows how you could get into Doctor Who with K9 and Company... |
