The Doctor and Donna will travel to Pompeii AD 79 on the eve of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and it was even filmed in Rome:

This would not be the first time that a Doctor Who story takes place in that historical setting as Big Finish has done it with Fires of Vulcan featuring the Seventh Doctor and Mel. The article does not mention whether this TV episode is an adaptation of that audio story especially since Fires of Vulcan writer Steve Lyons is not one of the writers for the 2008 season. If it does turn out to be an adaptation of Fires of Vulcan then Lyons is likely to get a "Thanks" credit just as there was a "Thanks" credit for Marc Platt when Rise of the Cybermen & Age of Steel were adapted from elements of Platt's Big Finish story Spare Parts. |

| Hmm, I'm about to do Pompeii in Ancient History. Maybe I could convince my teacher to show it in class... |

| Really? What state are you in? It's mandatory to do Pompeii in NSW now, assuming one actually bothers to do their HSC. |

As has been stated at various places elsewhere, the filming of the Pompeii episode will be done on the sets from the recently discontinued HBO/BBC co-production, Rome. Have a look here for photos of the 'set' - a pretty elaborate reconstruction of parts of Rome itself.
This isn't the first crossover from Rome to Doctor Who - the recent Big Finish audio Son of the Dragon featured James Purefoy, who played Marc Antony in Rome, as Vlad Dracul, who was the historical basis for the Dracula. |
