Well I liked this eppy, similarity to The Imposible Planet and The Satan Pit aside. I was also hoping for another Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy reference, like in Christmas Invasion, just after his hands been chopped off and regrown, and he's commenting on saving the planet in his jammies like Arthur Dent. Smile I love HHG2G.

Liked the real time pace as well. Gave the episode a greater sense of immediacy and how frantic the situation was getting at the end.

I was in complete agreement of the Doctor's comment about humans. We are like that, we exploit everything to our own benefit regardless of the consequences (*cough*Iraq!*cough*). My sister thinks I'm wierd when I start cursing 'bloody stupid humans!' lol. Many days spent wishing for extra-terrestriality Smile

I think the jealous look was there; Martha is the Doctor's friend, not Ash's! lol. Cool

I give this eppy a 4/5.

Average. Too much like the Impossible Planet/Satan Pit episode duo.

I also think they're making the Martha character work too hard to be like Rose. Why have another cute companion be a Rose-clone, falling in love with the Doctor? Let's create a platonic relationship, not unrequited or impossible love. Urgh....

When I heard the title for this story, I was hoping it was somehow related to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The first time I watched 42 I did not think that there were any h2g2 reference but after watching it tonight I discovered 2 which are not quite imediatly obvious as follows:

- people falling out of airlocks and the episode tends to spend alot of time dwelling on being locked in airlocks and about to be thrown into space
- the whole idea of a countdown to doom is very similar to the opening 13 minutes or so of the radio and more so the original h2g2 tv series

If anybody knows of any other links within the episode I would love to hear of them.

I thought the most obvious Hitchhiker's reference was the very notion of the ship diving into the sun, a la Disaster Area's "sundive" stunt at the end of their gig. I pretty much thought the title '42' and the time till collision being 42 minutes was engineered around this Douglas Adams-style plot device; after all, it could've been any random number.
