Talk about the love Rose had for The Doctor and if The Doctor had the exact same feelings?
Personaly I still find it one of my fav things about Series 1 and 2 and maybe it's because I'm a teenaged kid but frankly I found it rather touching in the Parting of the Ways or Doomsday. I'm a new series fan and Doctors 9 and 10 were my first introduction to the show and Rose was the one I was with from the start and i still feel attached to it this day.
Anyone else feel the same way or would you care to open fire? |

I'll fire the opening salvo then. I loathe the sexual undercurrent of the new series; at first it seemed tolerable until I realised it was going to become the defining element that hooked all the stories together. Subtlety is not RTD's strong point and the Doctor/Rose love tussle might have added something to the show had it not been force fed to us so blatantly and constantly.
And now, the whole thing with the Doctor suffering his eternal Rose hangover while Martha makes puppy eyes at him and vies for his affection ... dead set, didn't this used to be about aliens and stuff?
I love the new series; love the fact my favourite show has been resurrected; love watching it and talking about it. But if the oh-so-contemporary romantic aspect was to be inexplicably wiped from the series, I'd be stupidly happy. |

Oh you make me sick!!!
The whole Rose thing was the worst thing that happen to the Who!! My greatest regret is she wasn't killed off at the end of season 2!! |

Well I totally agree with uhumanite. While I understand that romance was never a part of the classic series (well, not in an obvious way), I couldn't help but love the relationship between Rose and the Doctor ... and speculate on what went on behind closed doors.
I won't go into the details of why I love the Doctor/Rose pairing so much (I've done that too many times already), I'm just saying that there are people out there who feel the same way.
BTW Speckled Jim - I didn't think the Doctor was hung up on Rose for that long. Maybe for the first few episodes, but then he seemed quite comfortable with Martha's friendship. And perhaps I would have liked Martha more if that was all she was after. |

I made myself sick once-
I understand its not everyones cup of tea but that is why I posted it. Personaly I prefer character development over companions who simply scream.
I do firmly believe Rose should be a one off and not every companion has to love The Doctor. |

growing up with the old series I was uncomfortable with the sexual/romance side of it......I see the Doc as being asexual....now Captain Jack is a totally different kettle of fish......
Hey Guys...........I'm backkkk.....spent 5 weeks in hospital, after my car ran me over |

Fair 'nuff, but Martha still carried on like a lovesick teenager pining for the school hunk at a blue light disco for the majority of season 3. I'm not denigrating her; I think Martha kicks arse. I only wish the writers didn't undermine her tough character with the odd paltry whine along the lines of "I wish he'd look at me... " etc etc. Christ, how I long for the likes of Leela once more ...
And, in my defence montypython, I'm 35. I lost interest in sexual tension with Mulder and Scully, let alone Dr Who. |

Fair enough. And I know plenty of teenagers who don't like it either. There's one guy in particular who loathes it beyind anything else. Maybe the writers thought they could expand their audience by introducing this element ... or maybe RTD just can't help himself. |

Falling in love with someone doesn't automatically equate to character development though, you know. The stereotypical screaming companions you refer to hung on to the Doctor and looked up at him with admiring eyes... it's hard to see the difference between that and Rose's lovesick fawning in Series Two. It's the exact same thing, except one's based on love rather than friendship. And don't try and tell me that love is better than friendship, because they're equally important.
Rose, Rose, Rose... the thing, for me, is this. I adore 'Love & Monsters'. I adore 'The Girl in the Fireplace'. In both cases, there's instances of a geeky guy falling in love with a woman, and in both cases I'm touched by the relationship. I know you've said before, monty, that you disliked Reinette's involvement because of the inter-series continuity, and to be fair, you're right. But the reason I can excuse it, or in fact completely warm to it, is because I find the characters, and their interactions with each other, really likeable. For Reinette, it's a fairytale romance, and although this usually implies a boring chivalry, Moffat largely subverted this (other than the horse in the mirror scene, but that's not a problem) and made them equals without destroying the mysticality (is that a word?) of either character. In the case of Elton and Ursula, they're completely, utterly average. Okay, so her being turned into a block of cement was a bit of a bad decision because it makes them look sick rather than in love, but I still like the two characters a hell of a lot. Maybe it's because I identify with them or something, who knows.
In Series One (and yes, I'm going to bring up that "She changed between the two series" argument again, but perhaps I can explain it better this time), Rose was in fact just as average. No, incredibly average. In that sense, the Doctor was the (dark) fairytale prince of sorts (that sounds twee, but it actually isn't, as long as you don't imagine Disney) and she was the utterly average, normal person. It was easy to see, for me, how the Doctor could fall in love with her. But in Series Two, she became smug, self-centered, and barely interested in anyone other than herself and the Doctor. Whilst the Doctor and Rose callously leave behind Mickey and Jackie in Series One, Rose is really sorry about it when she returns (and the Doctor is alien, so it doesn't matter). But somehow, as soon as the Doctor regenerates and decides he's now cool with eating Christmas Dinner with them... well, after that, somehow the two of them value Jackie and Mickey, and everyone else they meet, less. It's all well and good being in love, but when that means you have to be bitchy to everyone you meet (of course there are exceptions, but it's still mostly the case - 'The Idiot's Lantern' is the worst example), then that love is horribly self-centered. And, personally, it means I don't want to watch two people like that.
And Ickabod... that's nasty! I hope you're better. It all sounds like something out of that Doctor Who story, what was it called? 'Terror of the Autos' or something... |

I have here the proof that there is at least some level of love on the Doctor's side. In the new series novel Winner Takes All, Rose is trapped on another planet, while the 9th Doctor controls her through a video game console. He can only communicate with her one-way through her phone. Here is a message he gives her:
"Rose, it's me ... I can't get you out of there, not yet. If you don't carry onto onto the middle, they're going to kill everyone. But I'll sort it out. See you ;ater. Love, the Doctor." |

heh heh heh Nahhh my 7 year old got her foot caught in the handbrake and let it loose and I was coming round the back and tried to stop the car from rolling down the hill....she tried to get out and I put my hands up to stop her and slipped....it then proceeded to run it's tyres over me, fracturing my pelvis, tailbone and right femer, plus heaps of gravel rash and ripped muscles in my ribcage....so 5 weeks in hospital with a huge poster of the Doctor on my wall and nurses coming in to say "Hello" to him....I got so good in the end that I was able to inject myself with the anti-clotting stuff......not too bad...my car was a write-off and my daughter had major brusing to her left side from the impart of the telegraph pole....the said pole being the only only to escape with minor injuries....and whilst in hospital I had my Dad there for 2 weeks recovering from a stroke and then checking himself out and then a fatal stroke.....I also lost a close cousin to cancer.....my accident was on the 17/8...my cuz died on the 7/9 and Dad died on the 17/9
How's that in a nutshell |

Just heard this line from RTD on Doctor Who Confidential that I had to put in here, coz it made me squeal when I heard it. He's just talked about the one-sided Martha/Doctor relationship and then he says:
(roughly, coz I can't be bothered to get out the DVD and check it): "Rose thinks the Doctor is the most fantastic man in the universe, and the Doctor thinks Rose is the most fantastic woman in the universe".
Awwwwwwww! |
