|
As reported on the official BBC website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2007/10/02/49473.shtml
| Quote: | Christopher Ryan, best known for playing super-cool Mike in the classic comedy series The Young Ones, is set for a guest-starring role in an upcoming Series Four adventure.
Ryan will play a Sontaran leader in the story, due to begin filming in the next few weeks.
"I'm absolutely delighted to be appearing in this new Doctor Who," Chris revealed. "The last time I appeared in Doctor Who was in 1986, Colin Baker was the Doctor and I was still a Young One."
The story in question was the Trial Of A Time Lord, where Chris starred as the slug-like Mentor Kiv alongside Trevor Laird, who played Martha's dad in 2007.
If you know your Who lore, the Sontarans will need no introduction. If you're a newer viewer, however, you may not know that the Sontarans are amongst the greatest villains from the classic series of Doctor Who.
A military, warlike species, able to clone vast armies of themselves, the Sontarans are locked into an eternal struggle with their enemies the Rutans. |

I can't wait. You have to love the Sontarans . They were one of my favourites from the "Classic" series. |

| I just hope they get them right. No tall, wobbly headed Sontarans ala The Two Doctors, but something closer to the original. And they should be short; they're from a high-gravity world after all. Considering who they've cast as the leader, it seems they've got that much right so far. |

Unless we actually see this, and see it done well, I'm afraid I'm not very interested at all in seeing the Sontarans come back. They just don't really interest me beyond what we've already seen, whereas with the Cybermen, Daleks and others I can still see the untapped potential. There is with the Sontarans, but that bit above is about it. And if they don't show it... *yawn* |

| As routine as it seems to be now to resurrect one old alien species per new season, I gotta say I'm itching to see the Sontarans again. Hell, how about a mother-of-all-battles episode with a bunch of Rutans (and think how much the FX on those beasties could improve them - remember the luminous plastic ball covered in horsehair from Fang Rock???) |

As much as I love seeing a Dalek, they need a break! ...how much more can they do besides hover up stairs, scream "Exterminate, you will obey" and kill
Bring them back in (if it happens) Season 6!! |

No, no, I didn't mean that... I just meant that there is that potential to be unlocked, of them being huge battle-fighting warrior guys, and unless we see that or see something directly, directly related, I'm not interested. 'The Sontaran Experiment' had a guy doing tests, 'The Time Warrior' had a guy who crash landed and wanted to get back to the battle... well so do I! Speckled Jim basically said what I wanted to see... obviously, I don't want it to be a dumb shoot-em-up, but the best portrayals of war never are. I don't want to see, you know, a Sontaran force land on Earth and infiltrate the government ala the Slitheen and the Master, or something similar... give them a different edge, or simply use a new monster. They just need to justify bringing them back.
(That said, I'm a big fan of 'Gridlock', and look what that does to the Macra. Hmm...)
And yeah, the Daleks do need a break. I don't want them back either. |

Yes, bringing them back as they were in the original series does seem a tad boring, but the Sontarans do have some dramatic potential. If you've heard the BBV audios featuring them, they present some interesting different takes on the potato heads. |

| I haven't - listening to those audios has been on my to-do-list for ages but I've never gotten around to it. Maybe because BBV audios are so hard to bloody get. |

We need more villianous Timelords and I'm sure the Master will return, somewhere, somehow in Time & Space to act out his revenge on the Doc |

| I'm already on record as wanting Lucy Saxon to be the Master - the Master essence in the ring, and the body as his vehicle. |

It's been said before, and bears repeating.
Sontarens are the silliest race in the universe. |

How the Sontarans will look like upon their upcoming return in the episode that will see Martha's return to the parent Doctor Who series after appearing in Torchwood:

Oh dear me, this won't do at all. No. |

I must admit, they look a little bit plastic-y. Like Action Man toys (though I reckon that's the ideal the Sontarans would aspire to!).
That said, the Cybermen looked fairly rubbish in the lead-up to Series Two before seeing them in action, so perhaps the Sontarans too will look better in action. In ACTION, yes - sorry to repeat myself, but it needs restating. |

| Having seem the "new" Sontarans for the first time today I must admit they are a bit disappointing. It looks like they've made the suite way too big for the occupant. Half the Sontaran's face is missing because of the next thing. I hope it's going to have an adjustment or two before filming proper. Maybe the publicity shot has the wrong guy for the wrong suite in it. I don't mind the body looking suite indicating that the Sontarans are beefy muscley little buggers. As Sulf Niar said, maybe they'll look better in Action. I wonder if the Daleks will make an appearance for season 4? |

Having only just been introduced to the Sontarans (I bought the Time Warrior the other day and chose to study it rather than for my Legals Studies HSC exam!) I have to say, I prefer the original.
Although it did make my sister laugh- we now also refer to them as "the poo-heads"! (And when you have a sister like mine, anything that makes her laugh is a treasured rarity!) |
