Visitors to this forum may already be aware of this, but to those that are not:
The Guardian newspaper reports that Big Finish have announced plans to introduce a digital download service for all of their productions.
Prices will be 12.99 pounds for a full story or 99p an episode.
Other franchises such as Sapphire and Steel will also be released in this format.
I would suggest that you visit Big Finish's website for more information.
See www.guardian.co.uk/media for the story. |

Importantly, Big Finish are pricing the cost of downloads differently for different markets, apparently in an attempt to become more competitive in the US. Which has resulted in some anger from British fans, who feel that it is unfair for them to not be given the same price reduction as their US counterparts (and has, unsurprisingly, made the Outpost Gallifrey forum a much whinier place than it used to be).
For those interested, it's $19.99 to download a whole Doctor Who story (as opposed $35.93 for it on CD, including postage). Earlier stories are available at reduced costs, and those that are one CD stories will also be cheaper. There are some differences, most notably that you obviously don't get it on a CD and should save it for yourself to protect against data loss if you have problems with your computer, and I understand that you don't get any CD extras (interviews, music tracks) as part of the deal. However, it may place the stories themselves within the financial reach of more people.
It has also been mentioned that Big Finish are still determining subscription costs for non-UK purchasers, so that's worth keeping an eye out for.
The mention of episodes being available for 99p warrants the comment that it is the first episode only that is available for cheaper, to give fans the opportunity to listen to the start of the story before committing to buy the whole thing - and I can't see hide nor hair of it on the site at the moment. (Big Finish recently started a 'classics' range with The Phantom of the Opera, and the 99p for the first episode applied to it.) Whether this will return or be more generally available remains to be seen. |

Never underestimate the capacity of a Doctor Who fan to complain, whine, whige and bitch - especially online! |

Actually, I meant, "is it possible for the Outpost Gallifrey forum to become whinier than it is?" Because, you know, I tend to find that it's full of whiny and petty people. Okay, not full of, but they're certainly bloody loud about it (wasn't it Keith Topping who said "I love silent minorities, they're so loud"?). |
