Each year in the new series, we see elements from the classic series turning up. Some are obvious and iconic, others are like odd footnotes.

Which opponent from the classic series have you most enjoyed when they returned in the new series?

(PS - please don't mention any enemy that is known or rumoured to return in series 4. Some people are avoiding spoilers!)

Man, I'm surprised that everyone's gone for the Master so far (3 out of 3).

Ah well. Me too!

Daleks? A tad overdone. Cybermen? Brilliant... except for something called 'Doomsday'. The Master? Three episodes of splendour. The New Series so far has tended to have the big returning enemies have excellent, ground-breaking, defining-the-nature-of-the-threat stories ('Dalek', 'Rise of the Cybermen' two-parter) and then get reintroduced later and lose a bit of their appeal.

I blame 'Doomsday', personally.

'Course, it'd be unfair of me to say the New Series is alone in this. 'The Moonbase' using Cybermen? It's almost irrelevant. Daleks in 'The Chase'? Christ!

Anyway; the New Series has introduced the Master in excellent fashion, three episodes that did an excellent job of characterising him and his origins. But Russell also redefined him, too; he made him more than just "the Doctor's charming enemy", as so many stories did. It was, in a lot of ways, a rerun of the redesigned Master in the TV Movie, only a superior and more amusingly insane one (as opposed to unintentionally amusingly insane one).

And though I love Derek Jacobi's turn as the Master, John Simm deserves every inch of praise thrown at him.

As Russell would say: "Hooray!"

Love your new avatar.

(It seems to me that he's looking at the camera as if to say, "What a bunch of loonies those people behind me are." The idea of that is really making me laugh. Best avatar ever)

Exterminate, it's gotta be the Daleks!! ....although they have been overused by R.T.D in the last 3 seasons (getting his money worth), second to them it's the Master but I preferred the previous one (can't think of his name) who play along side of Jon, Tom & (maybe Peter as well) Slyvester. He was in the last show, Survival.

Now don't get me wrong, I loved John Simms performance and I hope he reprises the role (although RTD has stated he won't be bringing the Master back and he only wrote that scene with the hand incase a futre executive producer does) but I still belive the best Mastrr has to be the original, Roger Delgado.

My vote went to the Daleks. But I agree that they are being over used. Every season. Even at the height of Dalek Mania they still got a break.

However I think that the Master's return was the best "classic villian return" story.

I would have to say the Sontarans , although I think the Classic Series Sontarans were better.I went to vote for them at the top of the page and found they weren't included.

The polls were originally set for specific periods, this one being in March this year.

There's no point in adding other returning foes to the poll as people can't withdraw their votes and recast them, so any foe returning after series 3 would be at a disadvantage.

The Master got my vote because I didn't really see him coming. The daleks have been overdone. Nice to see a Genesis of the Cybermen and Cybermen vs Daleks was a revelation.
Now that spoilers are over, Davros would have got my vote. He was as bleak and megalomaniac as ever. The dialogue with SJS was great.

We seem to be ending series on increasingly larger crescendoes. I fear next series will end with the Master, Davros, Sontarans, Daleks and a reincarnated Sutek battling multiple Doctors, family members, UNIT, Torchwood with Romana, Tegan, Peri and Ace in support

Yes Roger Delgado is the best! I saw John Simm before him, but Delgado just blew me away.

Okay. I've given this a lot of thought, and I've made my decision.

It is ... the Master.

You never saw it coming. I'd actually known about the return of the Master for some time, but the way it was handled in Utopia was just so clever and brilliant, linking it to something seemingly unrelated from earlier in the season. It was weird at the time coz I'd never seen the Master before, but looking back on it now definitely makes an impact on my perception.
