Thats right, it's been confirmed that UNIT will return in the new series but with it's name changed to Unified Intelligence Taskforce. It is unknown if Nicholas Courtney will return or any of the other UNIT cast but it is certain that UNIT or should I say UIT will return. Although the last appearance with Lethbridge-Stewart was in the Tenth Doctor story "The Warkeeper's Crown" which in the Brigadiers life takes place before the Seventh Doctor story "Happy Endings" and the Fifth Doctor story "The King of Terror".

Also it still unconfirmed if the rumours are true about Davros and the Rani to appear in the new series.

Where's this been confirmed? I didn't find anything on OG about it.

EDIT: Just found it, sorry. Interesting name change - though I must say that "UIT" isn't as catchy as "UNIT". But why would the United Nations no longer really seem to be involved? Or is it just that, in the wake of what happened in Series Three, the countries have become more unified against alien threat?

This is all hypothetical, but it's very interesting.

I seem to recall a story some time back where the UN asked that they not use the UN's name. Though I can't recall when and can't find anything with a quick google...

Just like to express my disappointment with the United Nations' attitude to the UNIT name. The United Nations did not seem to have any objection with the UN being part of the UNIT name during the time of the original series.

Yet it took them some forty years to have a problem with it.

The name change to Unified may have something to do with what happened in the 2007 season as Sulp Niar says but we just have to wait and see on this.

40 years ago, we didn't have an internet - or, at least, not one used as a common communication/research tool.

40 years ago, we didn't have students 'writing' essays by copying and pasting information from the internet, without checking if the facts were true.

40 years ago, no one set up fictional websites (like www.unit.org.uk) with no indication that they weren't real - and we're not talking about fans here, we're talking about the BBC setting up a pretend factual website for a fictional organisation!

40 years ago, Doctor Who wasn't as successful as it is now in the UK, let alone in many more countries as it is now.

In some respects, it is a complement for the UN to ask that their name not be used for a fictitious organisation - it tells us that Doctor Who is a big deal now.

So it was the actual real-life UN that asked for the name change? I'm confused Confused

No - I think what happened was that RTD and the production team thought about it, and decided that it could inconvenience the UN to have all of these UNIT fansites running around. Or something.

It is my understanding that the United Nations has asked that its name not be used in the name of any fictional organisation (not just UNIT) to avoid confusion. UNIT has been referred to only as UNIT since Doctor Who returned to our screens, and the new name is to avoid having to not say what UNIT stands for.

Actually I belive in "Aliens of London" the doctor is quoted as

"UNIT, United Nations Intelligience Taskforce. Good people"
Cause Mickey then goes on about Doctor having worked for them etc..

But yeah, the UN doesn't want to be affiliated with any fictional organisation anymore, not just in Doctor Who. Even HALO has been hit by it.

I belive R.T.D found out about this after Aliens of London had been screened.
