I've just become aware that the Russell T Davies-scripted series, Bob and Rose, will be released this week on DVD locally.
The basic idea behind the series is that a gay man, Bob, and a straight woman, Rose, meet by chance and fall in love, and try to build a life together against the expectations of their friends, families and themselves.
Bob is played by Alan Davies, who any number of people have suggested should play the Doctor (not me, though - I've never been impressed by him as an actor, including in this series!) and Rose by Lesley Sharp (who appeared in The Second Coming and has a guest role in series 4 of Doctor Who). It also features Penelope Wilton as Bob's mum.
My reservations about Alan Davies aside, I enjoyed this series - as, it seems, did the British public, as it won three British Comedy Awards.
There's a contemporary review of the series here.
(And yes, I already have a copy - I got it from the UK, as I never expected it to be released locally!) |
