Following on from the earlier polls of the 7th and 6th Doctor eras, which is your favourite story from the 5th Doctor's era?

(Note - later stories, such as Time Crash, aren't part of the 5th Doctor's era, even though he appears in them...)

How about ealiar stories like Castrovalva ....I know it's marked down as a Davison era but it was actually Baker's, the only appearance of Peter is when Tom regenerates at the end of the show Very Happy

Baker regenerates to Davison at the end of Logopolis. It isn't included on this list, as it will be on a future poll on the 4th Doctor's era.

Had to go for Caves of Androzani. It's very difficult to top for so many reasons. The story is complex but not too complicated, the cliffhangers are some of the best ever, and Davison really shows his versatility as an actor due to the situations the Doctor is placed in during the story. Which impresses me, as I don't think much of the man as the Doctor at all; he always struck me as really flat.

But Caves of Androzani stands out as one of the all-time great Doctor Who stories.

This was a hard one, there were some good stories in this era. Ultimately I went of his final apperance. The thing that threw it was how willing he was to lay down his life for Peri. The Doctor wasn't even sure he was going to regenerate. He risked his life to get the milk, only to lose half of it and then selflessly gave it to Peri.

I really enjoyed Earthshock, especially how they killed Adric off. Normally they gave companions happy endings, this went to show that life with Doctor is dangerous and sometimes fatal.

The Visitation, for the ending. I haven't seen it since it first screened way back in 82 or whenever, and I still remember how impressed I was.

Sorry Greg, you are right ...that's what I get for coming here when I'm tired Very Happy

I'll choose The Caves of Androzani, I haven't seen alot of Davison era besides that, Resurrection of the Daleks, Visitation and The Five Doctors which seems to be all on par from memory.

While Caves is probably just as worthy of being chosen here, I'm going to be a bit different and go for Frontios as my favourite, and one of the reasons for this I think is Davison himself. He's just so good here, and also very different to the stories seen previously.

I wonder if this is solely down to Bidmead, it would have been interesting had he had written some more episodes for Davison (or C.Baker) - or perhaps even better, if JNT had sacked Saward immediately after this story and re-installed Bidmead as script editor. You only have to watch the next story to see how bad Saward could be.

I might mention the companions as well here, let's face it, save Enlightenment, there isn't really one other Tegan/Turlough story where they really do ANYTHING. Here they are both good - making the story so much better.

I could go on and on, as it's one of my favourites in the entire series, but I've probably rambled enough already ...

WHile Caves is probably the best DW story ever, I have to say that Kinda was my favourite juist because I had no idea what was giong on and I haven't been that confused since Edge of Destruction and wouldn't be again until Ghost Light. I like scifis that are hard to figure out, that have strange concepts, that make you wonder what if. Also I don't remember any androids being in that story.

PS please dopnt tell me what was happening.

I was going to hold off for longer in voting, so that I could give some equal weight to the poll, but happily it's not all been for 'Caves of Androzani' - and the other votes aren't out of guilt or anything, either!

That's not me bashing 'Caves', by the way; in fact, before I saw this thread, I watched it the night before and was captivated yet again. So I agree with it being the best, I just want to spread some love around. 'Kinda' and 'Frontios' are also both absolutely brilliant in their own way.

You know, I was watching the New Beginnings boxset the other day and wondering the same thing. I reckon it is down to Bidmead; he obviously had a lot of fun writing the companions in 'Logopolis' and 'Castrovalva', and his comment on the DVD about "they helped move the story along" sort of seemed to confirm that for me. Saward, on the other hand, reminds me of Lawrence Miles - he's capable of doing fascinating things with companions, but you also sometimes get the impression he'd rather they sod off and let him investigate the Doctor and the Doctor alone.

...Anyway. My vote, then, goes to another exceptional Davison story; 'Enlightenment'. Or at least, it depends; I could fully understand if anyone doesn't like it, because it does appear quite dull and inconsequential. But for me that works with the characters (or non-characters, as the case may be) of the Eternals, and the glorious ways that these are dealt with; Baron is an insane cackling pirate maniac with a gigantic bosom, whilst Marriner finds himself captivated with the (as we know) emotional Tegan.

Also, I'm one of those weird fans who really loves the "Turlough trilogy", and I have to say that on first viewing, the cliffhanger to episode 2 (I think it is) had me jump off my couch in shock. It's an utterly brilliant and insane thing for a script editor to do, and it surprises me sometimes that this isn't as talked about a scene as Adric's death in 'Earthshock'.

'Enlightenment'; a story where Saward gave a crud about the companions, and is therefore all the better for it. Smile

Every one usually picks Caves , yes its great but as a story I think Kinda is better.
Imagine if Graeme Harper had directed Kinda!

A much tougher choice is least favourite Davison as I feel there are quite a few of them.
Warriors of the Deep (on the Cheap) comes to mind so does Terminus (Terminal).

It's almost impossible to pick one favourite story from Davisons era but I'll go for Black Orchid. Short but different.
