After seeing someone write that Sylvester McCoy "saved the show from Colin Baker hell", I remembered the thread in the old forum on Season 22 and thought it may be a good time to bring it up again. Maybe before we see it again on the ABC in the not too distant future, people can offer their arguments for or against (again for some of us) and see if people are willing to watch it with an open mind and discover that maybe it isn't quite as bad/good as they remember it being.

Season 22. Dear me. There are actually some good ideas in this season (like the idea for the setting of Paradise Towers), but not well executed. And there's some utter, utter stupidity as well (Dragonfire's literal cliffhanger, for instance). And much of the dialogue is just plain awful.

On the plus side is not qute as dire as Season 24 and it's marginally less boring than Season 23, but this is like being proud of winning the Special Olympics - it doesn't alter the fact that the winner is still crippled.

I'm sorry to say, Linx, that if you thought you were demonstrating a 'sense of humour' in this topic, you were sadly mistaken.

Leaving aside anything that you might classify as 'politically correct', do you know anything about all the other people who post here? Do you know, for instance, whether any of them might have some kind of disability and might have found your post to be a genneral sign of hostility to them - because, it appears from your words, they are 'only cripples'.

Quite frankly, if that's what you find funny, don't bother posting anything you consider 'humorous' here again.

For those who are wondering who voted Fantastic in the poll, it was me.

Quite the reverse scenario for me than for Greg. It was season 22 that got me back INTO Dr Who.

I still remember the scene with the feller ripping his arm off to reveal the cyber-hand underneath for the first time, and wondering who that funny looking feller was in the Tardis console room in the Two Doctors. And yes, at the time I thought the Borad was scary.

But it was that all time hated episode of Greg's Revelation of the Daleks (got your dvd copy yet Greg?) that threw me right into the thick of fandom again. I thought Davros was the best thing since sliced bread!!

I've only seen the half of Season 22 that is so far available on DVD. I quite like Vengeance on Varos, I like The Two Doctors more than any Tom Baker/Leela/K9 story (which coming from me isn't saying much) and after one viewing I don't know what to make of Revelation of the Daleks.

like Greg I walked away (or possibly backed away) from Doctor Who after The Caves of Androzani and I didn't return to the fold until last year (before the new series was announced - I sampled a couple of PDAs from my local library, loved them and now I'm back!)

I've grown to love Colin Baker through his Big Finish work, and the two 6th Doctor books I've read have been excellent (Time Of Your Life and The Killing Ground, both by Steve Lyons and featuring Grant Markham) - I'm not convinced I'll love the rest of Season 22 when I see it, but I'm looking forward to what will be mostly "new" Who to me after Androzani screens later this year...

Thank you, Mr Gatherer. I wasn't really expecting any sort of intervention, but it's nice to see it all the same.
I was in fact defending my own - some of us have the opportunity to do so, and expend great energy in making people aware that we're human too and are just as capable as other people of achieving great things... Don't forget that Dortmun led a revolt against the invading Daleks from his wheelchair! And then of course there's Davros - you too can create a universe-conquering force of evil, despite severe disabilities!

Season 22 was when I really started getting into Doctor Who.

I was turning 15 or was it 16, can't quite remember. I do remember watching every episode and think it was (and still is) brilliant stuff.

I was so glad that Doctor Who (The Series) had changed since the season before.

When I got Vengance On Varos on DVD I thought it was even better, because it was released in the format it was ment to be shown, in two parts. Brilliant story! Great ground breaking season.

I think it still looks quite slick compared to the next couple of seasons.

I hate to admit this but I would watch any season, no matter how bad it gets. All in the hope that the next season will be better.

The Web Planet is an example of the show stretching to do something that was beyond its means, and certainly deserves extra marks for trying.

Season 22 is full of examples of poorly plotted stories that rely on continuity references (many of them wrong), excessive exposition and tinsel to try to be convincing.

We know the Rani is brilliant, bnot because of anything she does, but because the Doctor and the Master keep on telling us. (That's exposition being used in the place of decent story telling.) And, seriously, you think anything on The Web Planet is any worse than the tree that was once Luke?

The Two Doctors shows that neither the writer, the script editor nor the unpaid continuity adviser remembered anything of the Troughton era, features characters with limited or no motivation, is bloodthirsty for the sake of it, and is more an excuse of JNT's overseas junket than anything else.
