What do people make of this (Season 20) 1983 story written by Peter Grimwade?

This is the analysis from the official BBC website (WARNING! SPOILERS): http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/mawdrynundead/analysis.shtml

I really hate to correct you and it is probably the confusion with the Peters but Mawdryn Undead was written by Peter Grimwade and directed by Peter Moffatt.

I love it when the transmat capsule appeared and Turlough explaining to Ibbotson what it is and then saying "Don't you know anything(!)" Yeah right as if he would know what it was. Nevertheless I did laugh when he said it.

Angus MacKay (Headmaster) was the original Borusa in The Deadly Assasin. Here he appears on Mawdryn Undead just two stories after Leonard Sachs appeared as the character he originated in Arc of Infinity.

And yes the return of the Brigadier was quite a bonus as well.

by the way - this is the tenth out of 20 stories - so we are half way through Davisons era.

Interesting plot gaffes in this one too. Can you spot them??

Oh yeah.

Didn't realise that the Fourth Doctor's crimson coat was used for Mawdryn here.
The Brigadier mentioned that Benton went to sell used cars after leaving UNIT. Benton was last seen apparently dead in The Android Invasion, the Brigadier's explanation may have been intended to make it clear that Benton was still alive. However a Doctor Who Encyclopedia has suggested that the Brigadier's memory of Benton may have been altered as a result of his earlier self's experience in 1977.
Noticed that the Doctor mentioned every regular character from the UNIT era (apart from the Master)except Mike Yates.
Here we have the confusion on when the UNIT stories actually took place. The original trailer for the first UNIT story Invasion has the voiceover saying that it took place in 1975 and here in Mawdryn Undead the Brigadier says that he retired in 1976! Not to mention that Sarah during her time with the Doctor and UNIT has stated that she came from the year 1980. Found out from TV.com that script editor Eric Saward later admitted that the 1977/83 dates were a mistake.
Of course this confusion with the dates could have been avoided if as originally intended William Russell had been available to reprise original companion Ian Chesterton for this story. The Brigadier therefore became the replacement character for Ian.
The clips used for this episode were the following according to TV.com:
"In Part Two, there is a flashback sequence when the Brigadier sees himself when he was at U.N.I.T. (from The Three Doctors, Episode Two), a Yeti (The Web of Fear, Episode 1), a Cyberman (The Invasion, Episode 5), the Second Doctor (The Three Doctors, Episode Two), an Axon (The Claws of Axos, Episode Four), the Daleks (Day of the Daleks Episode Four), the Third Doctor (Spearhead from Space, Episode 3), the First Doctor (The Three Doctors, Episode Two), the K-1 Robot (Robot, Part Two), a Zygon (Terror of the Zygons, Part Two) and the Fourth Doctor (Terror of the Zygons, Part Four)."

Nice to see Tom again from the flashback. The Black Guardian's line that the Doctor's good is his evil could be a possible nod to Sutekh's line to the Fourth Doctor on the exact same thing. On a related note to Tom finished reading the Time Team's assessment of The Sun Makers Parts 3 and 4, all of Underworld & The Invasion of Time Parts 1 and 2 in DWM 358.

Some hours after seeing Mawdryn Undead Part 2, saw Mawdryn Undead Make-Up Artist Sheelagh Wells in an interview on the Blake's 7 season 3 DVD as she was the Make-Up Artist for that season of Blake's 7. Titled "Sheelagh's Make Up Memories" this feature actually included a behind the scenes photo during the making of Mawdryn Undead which I will reveal what the picture actually shows when the ABC shows the relevant part of Mawdryn Undead in question.

I think Mawdryn Undead is the easily the best story of the 20th Season.

I like the idea of a companion trying to kill the Doctor - something different.

Love the Black Guardian's voice.

I've always had fond memories of Mawdryn Undead and on seeing it again I think I'd name it as my favourite TV story featuring my favourite original series TV Doctor.

at the end of episode three tonight my daughter (9) said "we HAVE to get this one on DVD - I think it is just about the best I've seen" (and that was with NO indication from me of how highly I regard it) Very Happy

Nicholas Courtney's appearance will hopefully bump it up the queue for probably DVD release - next year would be nice.

In Part 3 we get to see the Fourth Doctor's coat one more time as it falls off Mawdryn then gets picked up by Nyssa.
Keep an eye on that homing device tonight in the final episode.

I just saw The Godfather Part 1 at a film lecture and what it has in common with Mawdryn Undead is that they are both the first in a trilogy.

Good point Theta!

Just to add my thought - not disappointed at all...

Although, when the Doctor was explaining how if he did what Mawdryn wanted - to take all his remaining regenerations - I did let out a chuckle and a "might not be a bad option" with regards to the rest of the 1980's (some story exceptions tho)!

Then we'd get no Chris, David, or even Paul, who has done a lot through the audio.

I just couldnt help myself!!!

The photo showed Sheelagh making up Sarah Sutton's mutated face as seen in Part 4. Janet Fielding is also in the photo.
I just saw Sheelagh in another special feature on the Blake's 7 DVD "Look North" which is a report during the filming of the Blake's 7 episode Power Play.
Funnily enough I noticed by picking up DWM 359 on Wednesday that she is now the Make-Up Designer on the new series.
The child Nyssa was Lucy Benjamin, later to become a regular on EastEnders.
As noted by the official BBC site the episode guide which is made up of text from Television Companion and the Discontinuity Guide, when "talking to Turlough in the TARDIS in the fourth episode the Black Guardian appears to spit on himself."
That bit with the homing device is confusing to explain in words.
In the independent video documentary The Doctors based on the book of the same name Peter Davison was not too impressed with the two Brigadiers meeting each other. In that same documentary he says that he looks back on his stories and they looked "crap". Of course what he was trying to say was that if the series had more money his stories could have looked a whole lot better.
Also in that documentary he was walking with Mark Strickson at the location of Mawdryn Undead where the obelisk is and Peter asked Mark what was his first story in which Mark responded Mawdryn Undead that's why they were there at that location.
When I first saw it during the early morning screenings on the ABC a decade ago I was quite surprised to see Turlough staying onboard the TARDIS because at that time I was completely unaware with the show's history.
Former Producer Graham Williams who created the Guardians for season 16 was not aware of their return this season, as he was not watching the show, until he was told about it at a Doctor Who convention a few years later.
David Collings previously appeared in Doctor Who during the Tom Baker era in Revenge of the Cybermen & Robots of Death. In more recent years prior to Mawdryn Undead he had the semi-regular role of Silver in Sapphire and Steel by appearing in two serials including the final one. He also appeared in the final Blake's 7 episode Blake. This is quite unusual for someone to appear in the final episodes of two unrelated shows.
Collings later went on to voice Monkey for the English version of the
Monkey TV series.
In Mawdryn Undead he was mistaken as the Doctor but he did get the chance to play the Doctor on audio:

Ah yes. Full Fathom Five. My favourite Unbound story so far. Very close call between Collings and Warner but the story of FF5 tipped it for me.

I enjoyed Collings immensly in S&S the TV series, and his appearance again in the audio series is a treat. After knowing what to expect from S&S and their relationship, it's refreshing to see the other 'elements' from time to time.

He could still make a good Doctor, but it seems as though the producers are going for the younger regenerations unfortunately. Mind you, I did see the remake of Quatermass Experiment a few days ago, and Tennant was pretty good in that. Mind you, I wasn't happy with anything I saw Eccleston in before the new series but I was thankfully proved wrong.

But I digress.......

In his interview on The Visitation DVD, director Peter Moffatt said that he was nervous about directing Mawdryn Undead since writer Peter Grimwade was a fellow director and therefore could object to how he handles the story. However things worked out in the end.
