Obviously they couldn't find any other way to celebrate that anniversary. |

I loved the book Meglos when I was a kid. it was the first Who book I bought with my own money (aged 9 or 10), and I can remmeber the thrill of Meglos transforming and the bad guys being really bad guys. I haven't seen it on telly since about then, either, so.....
Fast forward to 2005, and it's a let-down, really. Not eactly tragic, but nowhere near classic. It feels (in set design and characterisation), like a hangover from Season 17. Grugger and his crew are straight from Creature from the Pit, only without the attempted humour to make their stupidity likeable. The original form of Meglos is unintentionally hilarious and the Savants and Deons crude stereotypes. These add up to make it bland, rather than exciting or even creepy, with no sense of urgency or threat.
In its favour, though, it's got the ever-excellent Jacqueline Hill and the cool Meglos/Doctor make-up, and a couple of amusing Tom Baker moments. Bring back Graham Williams, shoot Chris Bidmead and get Dudley Simpson to do the score, and this might be redeemable!! |
