What do people make of this (Season 21) 1984 story written by Johnny Byrne?

This is the analysis from the official BBC website (WARNING! SPOILERS): http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/warriorsofdeep/analysis.shtml

Do you people see 'Ingrig pitt!

Ingrid Pitt was also in 'The Time Monster' with pertwee.

http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musite/product.asp?sku=195300++&mscssid=FGN4A33JCH888MNW623WKT6E8D772N6D

&
also she and pertwee where in a movie called "the house that dripped blood"

http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musite/product.asp?sku=D44973++&mscssid=FGN4A33JCH888MNW623WKT6E8D772N6D

which also featured Peter Cushing* & Christopher Lee*.

`That movie "the house that dripped blood,
how Pertwee played the part was like 'SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE'
it has that same comic feel as Pertwee's first story & the feel he gave out as an actor.

And i think he's also got the same clothes on in that movie, that he had in his first 'Who story or similar, 1970 or something!

PERTWEE, even then was calling people "My Dear Fellow",
Anyway
He made a good Count Dracula in that movie!!

I can give this a fair rating only. The story in itself isn't too bad, but there are too many differences for my liking between the original and updated versions of the 'Eocines'. Malcolm Hulke would have felt rightly ripped of at his creations poor return.

What was it with the 'third eye' being used as a voice flasher, instead of a tool/weapon as originally intended?

If Ian Levine was indeed an unofficial continuity historian, how in the hell did this story get through? This is one of the worst cases of continuity gone wrong IMO.

And I also agree with JNT's comments in his memoirs that the lighting in the sea base is far too bright.

Those bright, sparkly, flashing 80's! (sigh)

I adore "Warriors on the Cheap". The Myrka must rate as one of the most ill-executed 'monsters' of any era. A heavy, slow-moving, pantomime horse! Laughing

Just wait until Ingrid Pitt stops leering behind Maddox and actually engages the thing in combat. If it could co-ordinate its feet enough to move faster, the hare would lose Wink

Been waiting months for this treasure to turn up. Next stop "Timelash" and the great 'pull the knob off the panel, and keep talking to cover it up' scene.

Funny how both stories were directed by Pennant Roberts.

Dont know if this is a classic, as there are some aspects of the production which let this story down. However, it was good to see these creatures back. 6/10

watch part one for the first time in ages you can see places where they could have fixed the continunity issues...for example Ithcar initially speaks of "the sea devils" right now we all know he shouldn't be doing this, later as the devils are being awoken from hibernation he calls them "warriors."

Now think if they'd had the silurians calling them "Warriors" or even "Sea Warriors" from the beginning there wouldn't have been as much of an issue, it would have just been their term for their bretherin.
just my thoughts.

Yes, great to see Ingrid Pitt back in a Dr Who role. But that monster - please. I was half expecting it to start speaking like Francis- the talking mule.

I had planned to switch off the TV once Part 3 was over but the voiceover during the closing credits reminded me of the Talking Heads interview with ABC science broadcaster Robyn Williams that came up shortly (and from the looks of it nobody else stuck around for it). Williams had been an extra on classic Who and host Peter Thompson briefly mentioned his role on Doctor Who as part of the introduction.

my memories of Frontios, The Awakening and Planet Of Fire are hazy at best, so I can't say for sure but I'll be very surprised if any of them are more painful to watch than Warriors of the Deep. I remember disliking this story when it was first broadcast and time hasn't done it any favours.

Well it just keeps getting better. I had to laugh when Ingrid Pitts character attempted some judo on the monster!

This was Johnny Byrne's last Doctor Who story for the classic series. Byrne's three Doctor Who stories are mentioned by name in a mini-biography of him that is included in the Space: 1999 DVD release. Warriors of the Deep I have just found out was loosley based on one of the Space: 1999 episode Guardian of Piri which Byrne had script edited. I had seen that Space: 1999 episode but I have to admit that I did notice the similarity with Warriors of the Deep.

Although this was Byrne's last script for the classic series he did however write a Doctor Who movie script that was ultimately unused due to a legal dispute between the BBC and his film production company.
However a couple of years ago Byrne recorded a DVD commentary for Keeper of Traken which is as yet not been scheduled for release.

While Warriors of the Deep was on I had been reading the novelisation of it by former script editor Terrance Dicks and it was quite enjoyable.

Most probably a coincidence but like the two previous stories The King's Demons & The Five Doctors, the last word in Warriors of the Deep begins with D.

Are you sure Warriors of the Deep is somehow related to Guardian of Piri?? Can you give some examples?
