| I had many missgivings about the 96 telemovie, but I actually think Eric Roberts did a craking job as The Master. Obviously the producers will bring The Master back at some time in the new series, and I was wondering what you guys thought about Roberts returning to the role? |

| Tim, good question. I would like to see the Master return, however, I think it should be an all new actor. |

Eric Roberts as The Master was probably the one aspect of the TVM I didn't like.
I'd like to see the character return though with less frequency than during the Davison years.. and I'd love to see Alan Rickman in the role. |

| You're right Kerr, Alan Rickman would be PERFECT for The Master. I know I'm in the minority with liking Roberts' portrayl, but I thought he brought something new to the role, rather than going for a goateed replica of the original(s). Anthony Hopkins would probably do a fine job too, but getting him to sign on would probably be as likely as Colin Baker winning a "favourite Doctor" competition! |

| I thought that eric roberts did a fine job as the master (when one considers he was told to act like he was in a cartoon) but i wouldnt want him to come back. I have mixed feelings about the master in general. sometimes i like him other times i wish he had never been created lol |

I'm not a big fan of the telemovie but I liked Eric Roberts as The Master.
If The Master does return, will we see a much younger actor in the role?
I can just see Daniel Radcliffe uttering:
"So Doctor we meet again !!" |

I thought of another one! Patrick Stewart would make an awesome Master.
On a related topic, I heard at the start of filming the new series, there was talk that Tom Baker would return as The Master. I couldn't see it working, but it would sure generate a fair bit of interest and add a few points to the ratings. |

Tom Baker said at one point that he'd be interested in playing The Master - I don't know if it was ever seriously considered.
Patrick Stewart is starring in a new sci-fi series being produced by a (non BBC) British TV network - someone else here probably has more info on it. at the time it was announced it sounded like it would share a few concepts with Doctor Who. |

I thought Eric Roberts was acceptable as the Master, but not perfect. If the Master were to return, I'd have to hope it was Alan Rickman too - as long as he played it in much the same way as he does Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films - or someone who doesn't look like, but portrays the character in a similar way to, Roger Delgado: the gentlemanly villain as opposed to the OTT maniac à la Anthony Ainley.
And how about a regenerated Rani, played by Bonnie Langford? |

I have mixed feelings about the Master.
When I heard the Daleks wear'nt going to be back. I was happy the show could find a new monster with the same impact as the Daleks, but then they did return and were very good.
I've heard rumores the Master is coming back. I'd be much happier if someoen completely new would come back. Someone who could equal the Doctor and be completely evil. Maybe another Time Lord or just someone from some planet who was just as capable and evil as the Master. Wouldn't that be good?????
I think the Master should stay stuck on the planet of the cheeter people.

I thought bringing the Master back for the 1996 telemovie was a bad move. It just made for a dull and confusing 90 minutes.
Having said that I thought Eric Roberts did a fine job. At least he was allowed to play the role as he saw it, rather than doing a pale panto imitation of the delightful Roger Delgado as Anthony Ainley either decided to do, or was required to do.
As for bringing back the Master I'd prefer they didn't.
I always saw The Master as a foil for Jon Pertwees Doctor. Once Jon left the role, the concept of The Master should have been dropped; especially after Roger's sad passing.
Killing him off and bringing him back just gets boring. He's pretty much finished in "The Dealy Assasin", a walking corpse, but he gets away. In "The keeper Of Traken" we think he's dead but he gets away, in "Planet Of Fire" he burns to death but returns in "The Mark Of The Rani" without a scratch. In the 1996 telemovie he's executed by the Daleks, (no less), yet manages to survive and take over Eric Roberts, before falling into the Eye of Harmony and, we assume, dieing yet again.
Apart from anything else ALL the timelords are dead. The Doctors the last one. Which means the Master & The Rani & The Meddling Monk and all the rest are gone for good.
Resetting the clock to zero was a good move by RTD.
The show can now build a fresh universe.
The Masters dead.
Lets leave him that way. |

Well I dont pay to much attention to actors names and the only one so far Ive heard of is Patrick Stewart and I think he would be a good Master.
I dont think he should come back though. I would much rather see the TM Monk back again as a new enemy.
Maybe the Master should mary someone like the rani so he would be the Mister. (I know its a lame joke but still) |

| I liked him, simply because he wasn't another pale imitation of Roger Delgado. He was as different from RD as Peter Davison was from Jon Pertwee... |

Poor Alan Rickman. I'd like to see him play someone nice for a change.
...
As for Eric Roberts... I didn't mind it so much, but camp evil in a serious premise is not my kind of tea (actually, I hate tea...). Although, the premise was not exactly that serious I guess...

If the master can't have a Goatee,
Then why can't the doctor have some facial-hair instead |
