| See my post in the Ghost Light poll for what I think of this season as a whole. This story is also something quite special and wonderful, although a little slow in places, but it soon picks up again. Season 27 could have been amazing had it ever existed! |

agreed, i love it! I like the use of modern special effects to make the sky actually look stormy during the climactic battle lol.
I love the line: "Do not interrupt me while I'm eulogising!"
The underwater stuff is incredible for such a tight budget, although if you notice the number of Russian commandoes keeps fluctuating.... |

The isolated music option on the original broadcast version of The Curse of Fenric on the DVD is very impressive, to me, the DVD was worth it for that alone.
Janet Henfrey (Miss Hardaker) later went on to play Mrs Bale in As Time Goes By. In fact later in the night I may spotted her when I had a brief look at the preview for the conclusion of the As Time Goes By Reunion Specials, which is to be shown tomorrow night.
Christien Anholt (Perkins) is the son of former Space: 1999 star Tony Anholt. Later on, Christien played Nigel in the TV series Relic Hunter alongside Tia Carrere.
Quite funny when the Doctor dropped something on his foot.
The attack of the Haemovores at the church is definitely my favourite part of the story. This is where the isolated music is definitely impressive.
It is not audible on-screen but the Doctor says the names of his former companions Susan, Ian, Barbara, Vicki and Steven when he realises that he has to have faith. Their names could not be heard clearly apparently because the production team did not expect the audience at the time to know who they were.
I remember watching bits and pieces of The Curse of Fenric at my friend's place when the ABC originally showed it. For Part 3, I did not see the end of it as I got picked up by my father, but my friend told me the next day that the cripple Judson stood up. That is how I first knew about it, he also told me about Kathleen's husband being killed. |

| I really enjoyed the third episode. Vikings, Russians, decoding machines, logic games, vampires, World War 2, ancient treasure, belief versus unbelief, suspenders. This story has it all! |

This story vies with Ghost Light as the best of the season - my opinion varies from time to time as to which deserves it most. It a bit continuity-heavy, but it's 'good' continuity (that is, it doesn't hamper your understanding of the story, but it adds to the enjoyment of fans watching it). Things like the Doctor naking his companions (as TS mentions) as a source of his faith is a magnificent touch.
The story also builds nicely, and the revelation of Judson as the villain is surprising enough.
On the other hand, I didn't find Phyllis and Jean terribly convincing and some of the scenes of the Haemovores moving down tunnels and across country are held for a bit long (and not helped by Phyllis and Jean's silly hand poses - they don't look terribly threatening with their hands in those positions).
Had there been stories of this quality back in season 20, Davison might have stayed; had they been in season 22, the hiatus might never have happened. It's a goodun and well-deserving of release early in botgh the videos and DVDs. |

The Curse of Fenric shows how good the McCoy era could've been. A good story with great performances from some of the guest cast.
Much better than the rubbish we've been watching over the past few weeks. |

I finally had a proper look at the preview for the final instalment of the As Time Goes By Reunion Specials and she is definitely there.
Making a cameo in the final episode of The Curse of Fenric is Sam and Joe Kent-Smith, Sylvester McCoy's sons. They appeared as Haemovores.
The girls being turned into Haemovores really terrified me upon seeing it in the original ABC broadcast. Also terrifying for me at that time was seeing the demise of Jean and Phyllis.
Even though this serial was recorded way before the previous transmitted Ghost Light, Ace still makes a mention of the house seen in Ghost Light.
Dr Judson gets killed when his body was taken over by Fenric and sometime later Commander Millington is shot dead by Vershinin. In a bizarre and sad case of life imitating art the actors who played Judson and Millington died back in December 2003 in the short time between each other albeit in reverse order with their characters. Alfred Lynch (Millington) died on December 16 2003 while Dinsdale Landen (Judson) passed away thirteen days later on December 29.
I bought the DVD of Fenric shortly after finishing The Two Doctors DVD. Upon watching the DVD, I have to say that I definitely enjoyed Fenric more than The Two Doctors. |

The intention was that The Curse of Fenric would be shown first, so that the decision to go to Gabriel Chase would have been made by the Doctor after hearing Ace's comment. The bradcast order was later changed. |

I liked this story but, even though Im probably totally wrong and please tell me that I am, I do have one problem with it. The preist fellow or whoever he was said that his father had been the priest before him but I thought that priests and vicars and things werent allowed to have sexual contact
Very good from me. |

Church of England vicars can as far as I know. However I don't know what denomination St Jude's was. I assume it wasn't Catholic.
Although 'not being allowed' to have sexual contact doesn't seem to stop some Catholic priests from having just that with anything that moves. |

I enjoyed this story very much. One of my fav. McCoy stories. I had never seen this story before (Hell, I'd never seen any of the Doctor Who stories beofre thay had shown on the ABC in the last 2 years) - so I'm glad it made sence the first time round.
I liked it when Ace said to the Doctor "I'm not a little girl any more, Professor"
Sophie was actually 27 when this story was shot - and she passed as a 16 year old (I'm 21, and I can't get away with that) - waytogo Soph! |

This also explains why the Doctor's brown jacket is only seen from Part 2 as it was meant to be a surprise to the viewers but the surprise was gone with Battlefield & Ghost Light being screened ahead of Fenric.

Only Catholic priests are cellabate (meaning no sexual contact).

This is not the appropriate place to talk about such things. |

Hey, I wasn't discussing it. I mentioned it to correct a view that just because someone is not allowed to do something, doesn't mean that they're not going to. |

That's good. It would have spoiled that whole story if they had overlooked something like that. |

Here's a nice coincedence
Now the BBC analysis says:
| BBC wrote: |
The story is actually quite horrific in places - which is perhaps not altogether surprising when one realises that writer Ian Briggs has craftily borrowed many plot elements from John Carpenter's 1979 chiller The Fog, including an artifact being found concealed in the church wall, the vicar losing his faith, the church being stormed by grotesque creatures that emerge from the sea and the heroine being trapped on a high roof as the creatures try to reach her. This sort of borrowing is nothing new in Doctor Who, however, and is quite acceptable here - indeed, Briggs is to be congratulated on paying homage to such a fine source!
|
Now from what I can find (not too sure correct me if i'm wrong) - the new remake of The Fog opened in Australia on Febuary 2 - which is the day The Curse of Fenric ended here.
quite a nice coincedence
Cheers
