Britain's Press Association (similar to our AAP) reports that Sir Bill Cotton has passed at the age of 80 in a hospital in Bournemouth.
Cotton was director of light entertainment between 1970-1977, overseeing the introduction and growth of such programs as Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Two Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise.
From 1977-1981 he served as director of BBC One, as Doctor Who had its most successful period in terms of viewership (that's why we should care).
He ended up as Managing Director for Television at the BBC before retiring in 1987.
Vale Bill Cotton, a man who had his fingers on the public pulse, and god speed.
