Peter Graves has passed away.

Born on March 18 1926, Peter Graves is best known for his role as Jim Phelps in six of the seven seasons of the original series of Mission: Impossible between 1967 and 1973. Graves played Jim Phelps from second season replacing original lead actor Steven Hill (who had played Dan Briggs). Graves would later reprise Jim Phelps in the 1988-90 Mission: Impossible revival series.

Graves however did not reprise Jim Phelps in the first Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible movie in 1996. The first Mission: Impossible movie proved to be an outrage to fans of the TV series as Jim Phelps (now played by Jon Voight) was the villain and ultimately killed off in the film.

Graves made his feelings known about the first Mission: Impossible film as he would like to wring Tom Cruise's neck.

Graves' other roles included the Airplane movies, Men In Black II and Looney Tunes: Back In Action.

One of his television roles in recent years was in the season 1 House episode Love Hurts in 2005.

In a sad coincidence I only saw Peter Graves in The Invaders episode Moonshot not so long ago.

Peter Graves died on March 14 2010 four days before his 84th birthday.
